Tonight I went to check my rat trap I set in my engine compartment. A squirrel was under my cowl, right by the antenna. It was trying to chew its way out. It chewed out the foam cover that is under the cowl (passanger side by antenna) and was chewing the edge of the plastic trying to get out from inside the cowl. I tried to stab it with a long fork, but it got away.
I have a rat trap set in the engine compartment.
I have a rectangular metal trap outside the Exc.
Where is the air intake for the cowl??? I want to cover it with screen.
Could the squirrel get inside via the cowl/air intake?
i kno this is not National Geographic forum but why the hell do they like to go in engine compartment.. there is nothing that smells anything like food. Are they trying to steal the vehicle?? They chewed up a spark plug wire on my car last year
Where is the cowl intate? I want to screen it over.
the cowl IS the intake.....
I will edit that as I have seen 2 versions, one with the openings on top as the intake and the one that is just a plastic cover. There should be no access under it however unless that panel is pushed up. At least on my'02 it is sealed totally.
Don't you or someone you know have a pellet gun? Attract the critter with some food and wait it out . Leave the hood open if its not raining, it wont have to chew its way out.
I opened up the cowl and pull out a grocery bag full of nesting. I put chicken wire at both ends of the cowl were the water drains, and squirrel enters. Wife saw the squirrel this morning trying to get back in. Rat traps, cage trap, and antifreeze out. I feel like Bill Murry in Cadyshack.
Females are voracious at getting back in. That is their nest for breeding so you may have a very persistent tresspasser. Consider asking a friend if you can park the X a their house for a week or two. Make sure it is a good ways away from yours (1/2 mile at least). The squirrel should give up when there's nothing to try to get back into.
Squirrels are pretty fast and smart, they'll just chew right thru the chicken wire. How about a cat? That squirrel wont last the night.
