Timing cover - internal or external seal?

D1VE block:

The new timing cover gasket sets includes the seal - some with an internal and some with an external seal. I had an internal seal on my stock timing chain cover; now I have a Dorman cover and will install a new seal. Does it make a difference if the seal is internal or external?

Thanks.

Chris
