I have an 88 Ford F350 and my BW 1356 transfer case has ran out of oil and burnt up. What other cases will fit in its place? I know the front end of most Fords cases are the same, bu are any of them the same length so I don't have to shorten or lengthen drive shafts?
NP208, BW 1345 and BW1356 are all approx the same dimensions and will work with your driveshafts. I'd either find another 1356 to use or repair yours. A 208 or 1345 will be a downgrade... I've popped too many 208s to ever want to run one again.
Obviously make sure whatever you replace it with has the same type of yoke, either fixed or slip. But as long as you stay with same type of yoke you should be good.

I have to disagree with you 100%. I have the 1345 in my '90 F250, it doesn't not use the same driveshafts that the 1356 use. My t-case has a flange on the rear output, the 1356 uses a slip joint. My t-case has the cable drive for the speedo, a 1356 does not have this setup. The front output on the 1356 has a small yoke for a CV joint on the t-case end, my 1345 has a regular single u-joint at that location.
The low range ratio is a bit lower in the 1345 compared to the 1356.
Note that I did qualify my post by saying fixed yoke vs slipyoke makes a difference in length. I thought this should be obvious but added it anyway to avoid exactly this confusion.Your flange case is a fixed yoke case. You can put a yoke on it if you want, or a flange... It makes no difference as the case lengths are the same. Yoke size and flange length may affect driveshaft length depending on the length of your slipyoke in the shaft.
The 1356 case came in both fixed yoke and slip yoke configurations, and both tailhousing configurations came with or without speedometer drives. The main case also came in electric shift and manual shift versions. There are many variations of BW1356 out there. I have a 1356 I'll be using in my '86 Supercab that is a manual shift fixed yoke with speedometer drive.
