Your comparing apples and hamburgers, your 7.3 does not have a DPF system and the power output between the 2 is totally different.
Really, My 08 don't have a DPF either. And the power output is the same, it comes out the back of the tranny. Any analysis more complex than that is over my head.
3.73 Axle in my 2008 6.4L
4.10 Axle in my 1996 7.3L
I have removed the DPFE & CAT on the 6.4L & only get 16.1 MPG
Yeah, I don't know what to say about that. My best response is that tuners are for performance, not economy. 16 is not out of line for these trucks. It's just part of the deal with the 6.4L and as I read about the 6.7L they are not much different. My 7.3L was a smaller truck (EC 250) with a 3.73 and I don't think I got more than 17 and change from it on the interstate. I know it adds up over time but it's just part of owning a truck like this. If diesel wasn't so darn high it wouldn't hurt so much. If you owned a diesel 10 years or more ago diesel was always cheaper than regular gas. They said supply and demand drove the price up when China and India started building like crazy. OK, so they have backed off a lot, and we aren't building anything in this country or Europe, so why is it still so high? I'm just saying!!

I don't understand the statement about the power output is the same.
Well, now we are even because I didn't get the comment about hamburgers and bananas or whatever. my post was a response to that. It's just what I said. Both trucks put power at the back of the tranny, then either the drive shaft or the transfer case and drive shaft(s) transfer it to the wheels. What's different? You can make the HP about whatever you want to with either one. I just want to pull my trailer. I've pulled the same trailer with both trucks. The SRW truck was a bit less stable then the DRW but both trucks (and both motors) pulled the trailer fine. And now that the DPF is gone the fuel mileage (on the one trip I've run without it) was very close to the same. So, from where I sit, I don't see a lot of difference. Now when I towed with the DPF on the mileage was worse than the 7.3L and there was a good bit of difference in how the truck felt. Thats all.
Superchips 1856 Race Tuner setting #1 - 46hp which is the lowest setting.
Superchips told me this tuner DID NOT change any trans settings, but the tuner says "erasing the stock trans files" when tuning to the performance settings.
I don't kno much about these aftermarket devices & wondering IF I shoulda stayed bone stock & left the big huge cat & filter in place ....

My comparison was about a 1996 7.3 vs a 2008-10 6.4 Put your trailer behind the 1996 and then the 6.4 there's the night and day difference.

Gotcha, I've never been in or near those early power strokes so I have no idea. BTW I have a very similar tuner, an edge racing evolution. I'm also on setting number 1, 55HP and 150 lbs of torque. It seems to be doing great. The folks at edge told me to tow on setting 2. I tried it and it was really strong. Downshifted only once from Mississippi to ATL. I don't think the low HP tunes can hurt this truck. The guys concerned with trannys are running 200 HP tunes and more.
Generally the higher the horsepower the tune the better the fuel economy in a diesel. I am a bit surprised that you couldn't get it to 17-18 mpg with your configuration. I have a F-450 with 4.30 gears and a Gearvendor overdrive and with a 250HP Spartan tune was able to hit 20.3 for a 200 mile run at 60 mph...and 1500 RPM. The same run at 65 netted 19.2.
Just for comparisons sake I had a 1995 F-350 SRW standard cab 7.3 Powerstroke and the best I ever got with it was 20.3 mpg. That truck weighed significantly less, had a manual tranny and had less tires on the ground. Compared to a dually crew cab with 3x the power. I am happy with what these trucks can do. The biggest key to fuel economy is keeping your speed at 60 or below. It was the same with both of my 7.3s...over 60 and the fuel economy dropped significantly.
P.S. the Lie-o-Meter read 28mpg after the 20.3 mpg run on my 6.4.

The GVs working good for you, at 60 MPH I'm right at 2000 RPMs. That's a big difference. But not enough to make me spring the big bucks for the GV. Some report they can't use it towing and that's mostly what I do with the truck.

Yeah, their website rates it for 30k gross for recreational use and 25k for commercial. Some of the guys on here say they called and asked and were told it was not recommended for heavy at all. What I know is that I have had zero problems with it and have driven in double over for 900 out of a 1000 mile trip pulling my 18k 5th wheel. Did the return without using the GV and the difference was 9.5 MPG with and 9.0 without. Before tuning and deleting the DPF the GV was not usable while towing because the truck would kick down at the slightest slope.
I have an 08,250,3;73 GEARS,pulling a 14,000 5er,getting 8 to 8.8 and 16 empty. All hand cal. I try to keep the boost under 20 but I feel the confort zone with my truck is 65 to 70 depending upon wind, hills etc.

Where's your tach at at 60 MPH? That's where I towed with my F250 7.3L with the 3.73 Rear axle and it was sweet there. just under 2000 RPMs. Got 10.2 to 10.4 stock and 10.8 or so after a couple mods to let it breath. My trailer was around 13,000. heck, I got over 10 towing the new trailer before I got the 08.
I know it's hard to do but think if you had the patience to tow at 60MPH you would see an improvement in mileage. My DRW, 4.30 Rear axle stock was doing better than 8.8 on most trips, not counting hard headwinds and big mountains. Only made one trip since deleting but got 10.2. Came home on a different setting on the tuner and got 9.8 but I was not as careful filling the tank so I might be a bit off. I've got a trip coming up this month and I'll learn more then.

Identical to yours. I keep it at 65 mpg and can get anywhere from 7-9 usually...once I climb out of western md into Ohio that is.
I try to keep it under 2000 rpms, Get it in the hills and mountains you have to TRUCK DRIVE the thing.I started using the FORD centane add. over a year ago. Only had one major regenin over 3600 miles.Ford checked the computer data, and revealed some short term regens only{duration of few seconds}My pipes are clean, I haven,t lost any water, and I haven't gained any oil.I do short check the dip stick, and I have Ford change it every 5000 miles.
