Hello, This is a great forum so I hope you keep it! I have a 64 F600 and have seen many threads that show these may have had a 33?cid or a 360cid engine from the factory. I have a couple of books that show these came only with the 6cyl or v8 292. I have a code C and was woundering if you can tell me if they came out with larger engines, if so how can you tell the size??
While you are waiting, post the entire VIN. (xxx out the last few digits if you like). Look at your engine. If the valve covers are held down by two bolts through the top of the cover, it's a 292, or should be.
Scroll down here and you can find a stock-looking y powering a generator. Note the exhaust cross-over, which your truck will have if it's a 292. 1964 was the last year for the Y, so that's probably what you have.
Thank you for the reply!!! I believe the covers are held by 2 bolts. I am pretty sure it is a 292 but I thought that the 330 was also 2 bolts on the valve cover?? The vin shows that it is 292 (F60CGxxxxxx)

The 330 is based on Ford's FE/FT platform and the valve cover is held on by 5 or 6 bolts around the perimeter of the cover.
You may be thinking of the 332 based on the Lincoln Y-block which has the 2 bolt valve cover like a 292. The 332 was not available in the Medium Duty F600 chassis. You had to move up to the Heavy Duty F700 and larger to get the 332.

F60CGxxxxxx: F60 = F600 (gas) / C = 292 2V / G = Chicago IL Assembly Plant / 1964 was the last year for Ford/Merc based Y blocks, have dizzy behind carb.
FE/FT engines: 5 valve cover bolts per side, dizzy in front of carb. FE engines were not installed in 500 series and larger trucks. 1965/76 F100/350, 1958/71 Ford/Merc (1958/60 Edsel) Passenger Cars only.
FT engines (330 2V M/D - 330 2V H/D - 361 2V - 391 4V) introduced in 1964 .. used thru 1978...so any of these could also be found in 500/750 series trucks.
1973/78 F350's made especially for U-Haul use the 330 2V M/D (aka X/D) FT engine. This is the only F100/350 to use an FT engine.
Just so y'all are aware: The VIN engine codes for 1964/65 FT engines (excepting the 391 4V) changed in 1966.
FE 360 = 1968/76 F100/350 only.
According to the 1957/63 Ford Truck Parts Catalog (cited for verification): 1957/63 500 and larger series trucks were available with two Lincoln derived Y blocks: 302 & 332.
Both were cancelled after 1963, replaced by FT engines.
The 223 I-6 was the 'standard equipment' engine available in 1954/64 F100/600's. Optional 262 I-6 introduced in 1961, used in F100/600's thru 1964. Both have the intake/exhaust manifolds on the left (drivers) side.
240/300 I-6's introduced in 1965, both have the intake/exhaust manifolds on the right (passenger) side. The 240 was the standard equipment engine in F100/600's thru 1974, the 300 was optional.
240 cancelled after 1974, replaced by the 300 as the standard equipment engine. 240 was also the standard equipment engine in 1965/72 full sized Ford Passenger Cars, no 300's in cars.
Bill, you never cease to amaze me with all that stuff you got locked up in your head. Incredible. I know you get a lot of that stuff out of books that you have but books do no good unless you know where to look. I think a lot of us would be lost if you weren't there to point us in the right direction. Stick around, okayyyyyyyyyyyyyyy?
Bill, Thank you for the info, and it is a bunch. After more search you are correct, I believe it is a 292 with the VC bolts in the middle of the cover. I got a great deal on this old 600, it was some what of a barn find so i would like to keep it looking good and original. Thanks again to all. This is a great web site for older Fords!!!
1964 was a transition year for engines in F 600's. Early F 600's you will find commonly find the 292, later built units you will find the 330. By 1965, Ford had all the newer family of gas truck engines in place ( both 6 cyl and V8 ).
