I have a front end out of a 1978 F-250 4x4. I want to put it under my 1974 high-boy.The gear ratio in both is the same. I want to gain the disk brakes and ground clearence. The later axle has yoke at the top of the pumpkin. Not close to the ground like the closed knuckle front end. Does any one know if the spring perches are in the same place on both axles? Will I have any problems with the front drive line hitting on anything?
I have done this swap and there are no issues you will run into. Your front driveshaft will have very little angle to it with the newer front end under the truck. You will love the improved braking.
I didn't chance the proportioning valve, though i heard it needed to be done. The truck i did this swap on had power drums front and rear. When i did the swap I also swapped out the rear dana 60 for a dana 70 dually. I put on a new master cylinder for a 79 F350 dually 4x4 and a power booster from a 79 F250 4x4, but left the valve alone and i have no problems braking at all. This truck has hauled 6000 lbs of sand many of times with no issues stopping. You are gonna have to get the rubber brake hoses for a 77.5-79 F250 4x4, and you might have to put the brass adaptors on your brake likes where the steel lines go into the rubber lines. Its not a big issue but it was needed on mine.
