C-6 Trans Help needed

My 79 4x4 with a 351 with a C6. When I put it in gear. It sits and take a little bit to start to go. Once it does. There is no slipping and runs fine the whole time it is in drive. But put it in park or reverse. Then back into drive. It sits there until it seems like it builds up pressure then engages. It does not do this in reverse.
Something I can fix or is this just a rebuilt Tranny time?
Thanks for your time
Matt

How's the fluid level? I'd do a fluid and filter change, and put a can of seafoam in there. A dirty filter can cause all kinds of issues, including things like you mention. Start with the easy stuff first.

The level is fine. I think you are right about the trans service. It just felt more like a fluid pressure problem then something wrong with any clutch packs or anything. I am going to try that first.

Sounds like the forward clutch seal is going. This is a common C6 problem.
The o ring on the forward clutch piston becomes hard with age, when it's cold it doesn't seal well and the forward clutch won't engage. As it warms up the o ring will "soften" and begin to seal well enough.
This is a progressive problem and gets worse with time. It will take longer and longer to engage then eventually won't engage at all.

Is this something that is serviceable myself without a complete rebuild? I have done some major tranny work in the past. I have a pretty well equipped garage. I just have never done any Ford tranny work before. Let alone a 4x4.
Thanks
Matt

rebuild it. this is the exact same issue I got advice on a while ago. to acces the seal you have to tear down the entire transmission so no reason not to rebuild at same time

For Ford transmissions, I use Broader Performance. It's basically a one man show but his work is top notch.
I just got the 500 HP, wide ratio version (2WD FE C6). The total, including HD torque converter and truck freight to central Florida was $1,435.00

I'd rebuild it myself if I were you. Despite popular belief, automatic transmissions are not very hard to build/ rebuild. Taking it out of and putting it in the truck will be the hardest part. And the only major difference between most 2wd and 4x4 A/Ts is the 4x4 will have an adapter housing instead of a tail shaft and will also have a shorter output shaft. (There isn't a speedometer spline on most 4x4 output shafts, the speedometer is usually in the the transfer case.) You've got this!! Go for it!!

My plan is to rebuild it myself. I have rebuilt A/Ts before. But never a C6. Are there any "Special" tools required for the C6. Or any other C6 tips that will help out the first time rebuilder of one of these?
