1988 f150 300- 6 help
Can anyone help me??? Ill gry to give all the info I can to make this easy to figure out. The original starter on the truck took a crap. So I replaced it with one from advance auto... I know that's probly strike one in this but there parts are in my price range. So I install the starter from advanced and it starts to act up whenever I turn the key over to start the truck sometimes it starts fine then the next time I start the truck the starter stays engaged and keeps turning over after the truck is running. The only way to kill is ti turn the key off and dump the clutch and it will stop spinning. So next I replaced the soleniod that mounts on the fender. The problem seemed to be fixed for about a day or so. But its back now. Except this time dumping the clucth wouldn't kill it. And it just kept turning and melted the positive battery cable almost catching on fire. Anyone know what could be the problem?????

Nothing wrong with parts from Advance, I'd suggest going with BWD and Worldwide brands though and not the cheapy-stuff except when it comes to brake pads.
Now, the starter -should- have come with a fusible link that you crimp in place of the old wire end so that way when something like this happens that it fries the fusible link and not the new starter.
I would Start by replacing your positive and negative battery cables, if you don't like the cheesy new terminals then theres some decent quick-disconnects and regular lead terminals and they're fairly inexpensive as well; While you're in there though, if you don't already have one, I would suggest picking up a Haynes manual.
By the sound of it though your ignition cylinder(That you put the key into and turn) has crapped out, or something else immediately in the vicinity; Especially if when you turn it off that it does not cut off; If I recall correctly these trucks had a recall on them about the ignition cylinder screwing up and catching trucks on fire.

After a bunch of hating on buying replacement parts from advanced auto I semi figured out the starter issue. I've now been through four solenoids. When I install the new solenoids they work fine for about five starts then the starter stays running even after the key is offs. The only way to kill it is pull the positive cable off. Well I installed a new one from napa yesterday and it did the same thing again. What's happening is the solenoid is sticking open telling the starter to crank. I pulled the solenoid off the fender and tapped on the back of it and that unstuck it. So I am trying the solenoid again its now been fine for about twenty starts. Anyone ever had this happen to them????

Best advice so far....

Wrong.....
Ford had the recall for the 2g Alternators' power plugs....They were bad to overheat/melt and catch fire....
So it was recommended that they be replaced with any alternator work...
