1996 Ranger Push Starting and CMP Timing
Can push starting a car with a dead battery cause your timing belt to slip? My '96 is throwing a code for the cam position sensor. I changed the sensor and the CE light is still on. Ever since the problem started, my truck tends to buck or surge a lot especially when it's cold. I've been reading some posts and it sounds like my oil pump sprocket jumped a notch. I've never changed a timing belt...looking for some advice re. realigning the belt. ADDITIONAL INFO: Engine is 2.3L and Diagnostic Trouble Code is P0340 Camshaft Position Sensor Malfunction

PO340 code Cam position sensor - problem solved

I found that the alternator had a short. Changing the alternator, cured my engine surging, turned off the CE light and took care of the battery issues. I found the alternator issue by running an ammeter in series with the negative battery post and then pulling fuses until I saw a drop in current draw. Pulling the alternator fuse made the current draw go down to nearly zero. I pulled the small wire from the alternator with the fuse reinstalled and it also showed a total drop in current draw. Problem Solved!
