I am building my 390 and have just discovered that my heads do not have the same casting numbers. Is this bad? One is a D2TEAA, the other is a C8AEH. This is not a perfomance rebuild or anything I just wanna know if this is bad.
They both show 68.1 - 71.1 CC's in my book. If you are capable, you might check the cc's of each head to make sure they are the same, otherwise I see no problem.

Those two heads should be virtually identical, in combustion chamber shape/size, as wells as port configuration. The only REAL difference that you'll want to be concerned with (then again maybe you wont!) is the D2TE-AA's had the exhaust seats induction hardened at the factory.
Both heads benefit well from port work/CJ valves, as the smaller combustion chamber makes it easier to boost compression. It's a trade off compared to edelbrocks/CJ or other large port heads though. Weight being the biggest factor with the Eds, less work with the Large port heads.
While almost everthing is the same the C8 heads flow a little more I do believe. The difference is minimal. The D2 heads seem to have a better reputation for porting purposes as they have a little more meat to work with. I wouldn't be bothered on a mild engine with getting another matching head. Definitely want the hardened seats though.
I will agreee with that rat. I did some mild port work on the heads and ended up no touchin the ports on the c8 head on the intake side...they already looked to be ported. But there is still room on the D2 head. Thanks for all the advise. I will run both heads. They came with an engne that came from a rebuild shop around 4 yrs ago. Again THANKS!!
