new engine electrical problems

i just had a mechanic install a used 351w mtor in my 88 f 250.
i got the motor from a friend(so far so good).the mechanic had a fair price and all in all has tried to do a good job. the truck runs great but when warm didn't want to start, at first. i took it back and he ran a couple of ground wires from the battery to body and battery to engine. also repleaced coil connection and ignition control module.
the truck only slightly hesitates to start now but could be much better.
i drove it today on a 60 mile round trip and got back in to make a short run. it wouldn't start. just a click, so i popped the hood for a look and the cables he attached for the grounds to the (-) side of my deep cycle battery actually MELTED the lead and the wires melted through my battery.

any ideas what he might have missed? he's not a ford man. and i don't expect he'll try to screw me over but this is gonna get pretty expensive for him at this rate.
also should i expect him to replace the battery? i think so.
there were never any starting or electical issues before just lower end noise.

thanks

Did the mechanic remove the heat shield protecting the starter? It sounds like the starter is getting too hot. Check to see if there is a heat shield between the starter and the exhaust. Also make sure all of your battery and ground connections are clean and tight. Hope this helps.

you'll love this
he told me to replce the starter , i did.
72.00 fried the battery as i said. he had ran ground wires from every bolt on the truck. any way i bought a 14.00 starter realay after he didn't show up to fix it tonight and it fired right up ( with the old starter and battery on it.

thanks though

i am curious as to why you are running a deep-cycle battery in your truck. they are not made to endure the service you are subjecting it to. just wondering is all

If it's an Optima Yellow-Top, that's what they specify for vehicles with ANY non-factory electrical devices.
