Id go ahead and replace it all. Looks pretty rough me to.. Good time to do a nice exhaust system. Gain some power and fix your exhaust at the same time.
I ordered that kit from
Advance. No one had it locally. The dang thing cost as much to ship as the price of the bolt was!
Going to a nice exhaust system would be classified as a "major modification" to the parents which is a no no until i get it paid off. Now if this doesnt fix it or the manifolds are cracked then that may be another story. So after the bolts come in we will see
I dont want shorties. I plan on hooker competition headers later on down the road.
Someone told me you have to loosen the motor mounts to put on headers? Is that true? What all do you have to take off/loosen for headers?
I ordered the bolts. Hopefully theyll be here soon because its my daily driver
You don't have to for shorty's, not sure about long tubes.
FYI, I just bought an '89 F350 yesterday and guess what? It has a small exhaust leak that's ticking. Check engine light was on, pulled the code, came up as #41 "Oxygen Sensor Fault, always reads lean." It's pulling in fresh air.
You dont have to do anything to put shortys on. My longtubes fit just fine too. But thats not always the case. Your parents say no major mods but its the best thing to do to fix your issue. If your leaf springs rust out are they going to say you cant fix it because its major?
No if its a need then its okay. Thats why i said if the manifolds become cracked then im going with headers. Yes its in awful shape but if the bolts fix my problem then itll be okay. Its kind one of them dont fix it if it aint broke kinda things.
Personally i call it "preventitive maintanence" but hey im just a 17 yr old that knows it all lol. Moneys a bit of an issue at the moment anyway. Im trying to get some body work done and i found a set of tires i need to see about picking up this week
Off subject of the original but thanks, please dont block me from this forum.

My friend back home who has 400,000 miles on his '90 with the 302 has replaced his manifolds with new Ford units three times, they all cracked. He found some cheap knock off chinese ones that a junkyard offered for sale new at around $40 a piece and they've been going strong for years with no cracks for him.
I worked for a lawncare company that had an 88 and an 89 both with 5.8L engines, both trucks had cracked manifolds.
When I look under the hood of a '87-'91 Ford truck more times than not I find cracked manifolds.
In all the above cases there was no backfiring, but you are right it will suck in fresh air. So what will happen is the fresh air is mixed with exhaust moving through the pipe. Once it reaches the oxygen sensor the engine recognizes the fresh air and assumes your truck is running lean. So it dumps more fuel in, which causes your mileage to go down. At the same time the fuel/air mixture coming into your catalytic converter is too dense and starts to plug it. Between running too rich and plugging the cat your truck starts to lose power and the fuel mileage heads downhill.
So if it's a cracked manifold it needs dealt with, however, calling it a "death tick" might be a little exaggerated. But isn't that what you'd expect from chevy guys anyway?
I know this is a little off subject too but I am having really horrible Mpg, I drive mine like a grandpa. Mines a 1993 F150 with the 302EFI and the E40D trans. I get 10 on an average, and I do a lot of highway driving. Its got about 216, 000 its just about to click over actually. and its just been horrible on gas. i've been told I should expect about 13-15 out of it when I'm nice to her. I rarely drive fast. 55 MPH Everywhere I go, I've been told I need a new exhaust system on it or it won't pass inspection again come Februrary 2011. ontop of that a new cat. I've been told many different things from many mechanics. But I don't know which one I should beleive. I know it backfires when I rev the motor up to high RPM's I can't tell you the range because I dont have a tach but im going to guess around 3500-5500? It starts up rough when I do and I beleive it has a misfire, but it runs fine when I'm on the road, and you would think that it would throw a code if it did misfire? Also sometimes It kinda feels hesitant on the road like it kicks a little bit, I've changed the transmission fluid and filter and there wasn't any metal in the bottom of the pan so im guessing the trans should be fine because it's smoother then Airforce One when it shifts for the miles it does have on it. (Original Transmission Never Rebuilt). What would you think could be the cause of this? anyone? Please help becasue this is my only support of transportation and 7.25 an hour wont buy me another Ford (I'll only drive a Ford I've never have been left on the side of the road) Also, when you put it to the floor, it feels like its got a lot of power, but it doesn't feel like its got all of it there anymore. I figured thats due to it being older and worn from all the miles it has on it but who knows? Thanks everyone, that would be a great help
