Darn Exhaust

Alright guys and gals. I have been searching the forums, google, and youtube for an answer to my exhaust question. And i cant find an one that deals with what i wanna do.

I have an 01 5.4L SD and its as quite as my moms accord. Me being a poor college student, I have no money for anything right now. And i want my truck to be louder.

So I got this bright idea to just chop the exhaust off right before the muffler. The pipe left would end just after the cab, under the bed. So i was thinking id just slap on a tip that aimed down and have that be how i ran it till i got some money for a nice setup.

My questions are: Can i leave the pipe short like that? Will it sound like pure poo if i do leave the pipe that short and not get bigger and longer piping? Will it effect performance? (Ive read yes's and no's) And has anyone done this before?

Thanks y'all!

Ps. I would leave the cats on.

Here.. You decide for yourself.

I dont like it, but to each his own.

In the title it says straight piped, but in the description it says the pipe is after the cat, so it is exactly what youre thinking.

the only thing I would be worried about is fumes.

since you are cutting it off under the bed, that is a non-issue. a second worry would be soot from the exhaust all over the rear axle and under bed...again, with a 5.4 you shouldn't see too much of that.

last thing you might get is a whooping/chopping sound. I call that setup "Cop Baiters". The pulse of the exhaust is very noticeable.

Performance wise, you shouldn't lose anything. The cats provide all the backpressure for the motor. The muffler is just there for noise. So leave the cats alone and enjoy the increased volume.

Even if you take the muffler off you should run the pipe all the way out the back. Every time you stop or are parked for awhile you'll get exhaust in the cab, And since carbon monoxide is odorless it can be very dangerous.

Dont do it! Especially if you ever have small children in the cab, there is a low pressure area that sets up behind the cab at speed (notice the black plastic dampers directly below back window) and co will be mixed in with your exhaust fumes and it will find a way into the cab this will make you sleepy on a long drive, you will never know what hit you!

I wouldn't leave it at the back of the cab either. You can buy a cheap glass pack for less than $50 bucks and will allow you to use the tail pipe and at least in my opinion would sound a whole lot better. I've modified the exhaust on a few vehicles and I've always preferred a 'flow through' style that gives you a performance improvement as well as good tone. After going down the highway for a few hours or doing so pulling a trailer an open exhaust pipe will drive you insane. jmho

And thanks for the responses guys! Maybe i'll go out and buy a few feet of pipe and run it out right after the rear axle like some of the diesel guys do.
Is the stock size 2.5"?

And another factor in this is the parents. I still live at home . And they are 100% against me having a loud truck. Is doing this gonna make it crazy loud? or will i be fine with noise at rpm's around an idle? and start up..

It's gonna be LOUD. The cats will only do so much to reduce the noise...

Read this about diesel engines, then make up your own mind. Apparently it would not make a bit of difference to cut it off short. Gasoline engines are a lot more dangerous. The big rig drivers run them all night and use their sleepers. Travelling down a road wouldn't amount to a hill of beans. Problem as I see it is the soot will accumlilate and make for a nasty job working on the rear end, brakes, trailer hitch, rear light access and bumper.

The Leuchter Report: Fumes from a diesel engine are not toxic enough to kill people.

I have done the exact same thing you are talking about. Its loud, Ive had the neighbors cause problems because they thought i was going too fast in the neighborhood. It only sounds like that. At warm idle its not that bad to me, but at cold idle its loud enough to turn a few lights on across the street

yesitisrob. I hear what your saying, but I'm not sure you do! You're the one with the loud truck, yet your neighbors have caused you trouble over it? How inconsiderate of them!
Sorry, not trying to be a troll here, but I've been there.
