i started my truck this mornin at 52 degrees and it started perfect way better then normal its was more like a 2 second fire up then a 4second but i did notice diffrent in the sound from my exaust at first it was normal then it sounded like i had a mod compressor wheel like a jet (but cool) i new it wasnt normal so i just gave it a little throtel and then it quit this a problem
It could be that your truck turned on the "hey its cold out" stuff. like glow plugs heating up longer, aih, fuel heater.. but idk what the on temps for those are.
No that is completely normal it was just closing to help the engine warm up faster. I wanna say when I was in Maine anything less then 60* it would actuate. I love the way it sounds. It never fails though someone always asks whats the matter with your truck.

Mine closes almost every morning at first start up and I am in sunny California. I love the sound too though, in fact I have the 1200 high idle with EBPV closed on my DP tunes
First time I showed that tune to a couple of co workers, they thought my truck was gonna blow up or something, they all started backing away like something awful was gonna go down

Wow, Sept 7th and we are starting with the "jet engine" sound threads. Whoo-hoo! Summer must be almost over!
Sounds like normal operation to me. Check out page 4 of the attached link. It has some specific info regarding the EBPV. Air temp should be below 50 degrees and oil temp below 70 degrees and then it might close. Will even happen while driving under certain conditions.

That is awesome. Same thing happened to me. One of my Dodge driving neighbors brought over his son who had recently purchased a 7.3 Excursion. We connected up AE and ran the KOER test....when that EBPV closed, both of my neighbors (who have Cummins engines) took a couple of steps backwards. The look on their faces was priceless.
I then explained what was happening and how it can be used as an exhaust brake with some simple mods or custom tune. They had to cough up about $2k to accomplish the same basic thing that Ford gives you for free.
hahaha well im glad i made some laughs, but yes it does sound cool and my friend actualy back away as well
thats this exaust brake thing u was talking about simple mod and custom tune wich one i wanna see wat it sounds like on a 7.3 i know wat it sounds like on a 3406 catapillar and several mack's but never a 7.3 anyone got a vid? lol
and ya one day it was 98 and then the next cold everyone on my fb was like shourts yesterday and fluffy jackets today, but i love the cold so i dont care i just hope my truck does

Assuming you looked at the link I posted earlier, then you read about the Exhaust Back Pressure Valve and how the factory intended for it to be used.
Meanwhile, someone clever figured out that it can also be used as an engine brake by wiring up a manual control switch.
If you have a manual trans then you are good to go.
If you have an automatic then you also need a way to lock your torque convertor. It can be accomplished with a switch and relay.
If you don't want to mess with wires and plan on getting some custom tunes, then you can purchase a DP Tuner with a decel tune that takes care of that for you. Not all custom tuners offer a tune that operates the EBPV and TC so you will have to check with them prior to choosing a tuner.
ok i have a auto trans and planning on getting a dptuner for sure so all i gotta do is tell them i want the decel tune and il have "jakebrakes"? cuz id reather not screw with wiring

The "Decel" tune is an exhaust brake feature. Different from what is commonly known as a Jake Brake but the net effect is similar. By all means...if you were planning on ordering a DP Tuner anyway, then definitely get the Decel tune as one of your choices. You might want to post a question asking for recommendations as to which place to put it on your tuner. I figure it should be right next to your tow tune so you can flip back and forth easily. I don't have custom tunes so I don't have any good suggestions to offer.

No. It will sound totally different. A real Jake Brake is something completely different. However, they do offer a system for the 5.9 Cummins HO engines that is very similar to the EBPV system we have already. So, if you have a Cummins HO and order a Jacobs Engine Brake system from Dodge it won't sound like the semi truck versions anyway
The EBPV used as an exhaust brake makes a whoosing noise. Sorta like letting the air out of 100 tires at once. Not very impressive sounding but sure is comforting to hear while hauling 24k lbs down a steep mountain.
