Hello all, im new to the 6.0 world and have a 04 sd 6.0....ive been reading all of the pros and cons of the engine here and was wondering if it would be overkill to get a kit like this before i had any problems...
Why not start out simple
1. Coolant filter
2 Gauges--Like the Edge Insight or ScangaugeII
3. Fuel pressure gauge
These 3 things will tell you how good of a motor you have or spend the 5 to 7k to start
pop
I have the same kit from MKM Customs minus the SCT, and it is all still in boxes that I bought over a year ago. Probably about 2 years ago. I know when my gaskets and cooler goes I will be ready, but right now, I am sitting on about 1400.00 worth of stuff that is collecting dust. First and foremost, regular service intervals with the proper equipment and fluids is the key to the longevity of your rig. Good Luck....
Gauges and proper upkeep are probably the 2 best preventative things that you can go do right now. No need to spend more money unless you need to.
Although, I do have some problems with what they list as preventative:
SCT tuner doesn't prevent squat unless you use it to detune your vehicle and how many people actually do that? Not many, they do, but not many.
EGR delete, I'm sorry, I don't buy. 508 HP at all 4 rear wheels, bigger turbo, bigger injectors, bigger fuel pump and still have my original EGR. Really lucky? Possible. But there are a lot of people that are running relatively stock and still have their EGR system working in tip top condition.
Black Oynx have been on the black list lately as some people reporting problems with them not holding a good seal. I don't know if that was a one time shipment issue or if that is indicative of a larger problem.
In the end it's your money, but really do your research on this stuff and even if it's in a kit labeled "Complete Solution for..." make sure it really is a solution. What I would have liked to see was something that had a better built Oil Cooler, but they had only supplied Ford Factory parts. That I would have though should have been included in their "Complete Solution".
Here is one of the most complete descriptions of the possible issues/fixes I've seen: http://www.powerstroke.org/forum/gen...-6-0l-psd.html
Some of the items on your list I would consider performance mods more than bulletproofing. It's your truck and part of the fun is modding stuff and making extra power, but don't be misled.
I agree with Tex 100%. Good maintenance, OEM filters, no a/m, and gauges, coolant and p.s. filters. The 6.0 is a good platform but demands proactive, not reactive, maintenace.

The second paragraph supports the first paragraph on this, Tex. The kit indicates a need for an SCT, to supplement the EGR delete by turning off the check engine light for low egr flow. Deleting the EGR is a component that is in constant debate, as you know, with regard to de-bugging the complexity and contributing to longevity of the engine. Some say yes, some say no.

That depends on the year, not all need custom tunes to disable the CEL. The kit makes it seem like it is a requirement for all.
I do believe that is the 03 and 04s that for sure don't need the SCT to do this and the OP does have an 04. I don't know if it was halfway thru the 05s or all of the 05s that need the SCT to disable the EGR sensor though.
I have the EGR unplugged on my 05 and I don't get a CEL just FYI
Do you have an overheating issue? I remember Cheezit posting a thread 6+/- months ago about running with the EGR valve unplugged disables the fan. Or at least with those that have been flashed since '08. That's the only reason I plugged mine back in...it gets really humid here during the summer.
I'm not a fan of the a/m headgaskets...but like the EGR delete it's a matter of opinion wither the OEM or a/m are better. I'm still on the originals, so I haven't even begun to really dig into which is better, but I do know several guys are still running OEM and building 450+ hp.

500+ hp. How could you forget me? I guess that's what happens when all the love goes out of the relationship.

It's that TX/TN thing...could have only gotten worse if you told me you graduated from LSU. But seriously, I didn't want to "inflate" the numbers; just knew there was several guys with 450 hp out there. Call me a stick in the mud if you must...but 325 Hp is more than enough for me. I've driven a couple of 600 Hp C16; and I now operate 4000+ Hp equipment. I need something to relax with.
