have 98 ranger 4x4 4.0 v6 auto trans, while going down road acted like it shifted into neutral, speed ometer pegged out, tackometer pegged out. had to let off gas and wait for it to..... "downshift?" sometimes the engine would die. but would start right back up. wouldnt pull and couldnt run more than 2500 rpm. anybody help?
You may have more than one problem. Is the CEL lit???? If so, have your favorite autoparts store scan the computer for trouble codes & post All code Numbers found. Most will scan the computer at no cost if the CEL is lit, or we're having problems.
If the rear ABS speed sensor is acting out, things like the speed-o, tranny shifting, cruise control & ABS can too, as they use this speed sensors PID output to do their thing, so maybe put it on your suspect list.
With the vehicle acting sluggish the way you describe, you may also have spark, or fuel trim problems, so things like fuel delivery & pressure from a clogged fuel filter, weak fuel pump, dirty fuel injectors, clogged air filter, dirty MAF sensor, low voltage from the alternator or battery, low voltage to the fuel pump, acting out ignition system like worn plugs or wires, or cracked coil pack, are some of the things that come to mind.
SO, if you can do some trouble shooting, or give us some more clues, like where you are on All past & present due scheduled maintenance items & if this problem came about slowly over time, or suddenly after some event, we may be able to narrow our guesses down some.
thanks for the input, I will chack on these, it was a sudden thing running fine down the hiway at 75 mph and it cut out, the plugs, wires, fluids were changed 500 miles back, I guess I should mention that the 98 ranger is under a 1960 body, all the ranger wiring and other compponets are still intact, it has been running fine until the is weekends road trip
