New to the forum. Just curious if it is possible to swap a fuel injected 4.9l into a 1997 f-150 that has a 4.2l. I know i would have to figure out engine mounts and change how the exhaust is ran etc. I think the 4.2l has a cam sensor with no distibutor and the 4.9l has a distibutor (this is the main concern I have)? The 4.2l has siezed up (not hydrolocked) and i do not want to sink the money in another 4.2l. Any ideas? Has anyone tried this before or am I waisting time? thanks
Nothing is impossible but some things are not worth the money or time an u would have alot of both in that swap another 4.2 or buy a 96 or older F series it would be far cheaper I see 87 to 96 F series around here going for a average of 2000$ or less an in my opinion they are a far better truck than the 97 up.Good luck with whatever you choose to do.
yeah i figured on length being an issue so i figured an electric fan would need to be used and another thing i am trying to figure out is i think the firing order is different and the 4.2l has coil pack and the 4.9l has a distibutor so how would i get the injectors to fire using the stock setup (might not be possible)
You can't hook the 4.2 computer and ignition system up to the 300 and expect it to work. You either need to swap in a complete computer and injection/ignition harness from the <1996 truck, or build a completely custom wiring harness using either the stock 300 ECU and sensors, or a custom MegaSquirt ECU.
This is all assuming you can even fit the loooong and tall 300 in place of a late model V6. I believe there would be some major firewall cutting in order.
