No codes??

I have a 5.4L 2001 superduty. It does not seem to like to throw codes for anything that goes wrong. I replaced and had the ecm reprogrammed, with no luck. It runs....ok with enough to pull trailers and push snow. But talking to everyone else that has similar models with same engines i lack about 5 mpg. Any ideas what it could be confusing the computer? Would the truck being made 1/01 have anything to do with it? could it have 2000 parts on it too?

Hello countryboy1983 and welcome to FTE.

Don't compare your truck to other trucks, unless you have direct knowledge of the fuel mileage of the other trucks. Guys will stretch the truth when it comes to fuel mileage.

If the truck is running OK why would you expect it to throw an error code?

There are a lot of things that can shave around 5 MPG off of your fuel mileage that do not throw codes.

Are your tires taller than stock size? Is the truck lifted? Are the tires wider than stock? All of these will contribute to a decrease in mileage. Certain tires, even in stock sizes, have more rolling resistance and will decrease fuel mileage.

Finally, your right foot has a lot to do with fuel mileage. An aggressive driving style can shave off a few MPGs .

The reason I say it won't throw codes is....I had the typical alum block where it likes to throw out spark plugs through the coil packs, or just the coil packs gone bad. I have driven up to 10 miles on just 7 cylinders without a code.....the only way i can find little sensors that gone bad is trial and error....but that gets expensive fast

If you are missing a cylinder, then your definition of "OK" is different than most people.

I have the V10, had two bad coils and it made the entire truck shake violently. There are some pretty interesting things the computer uses to trigger the CEL. Good news is that the computer does know what is happening, and shuts of the fuel to those cylinders so it won't burn up your catalytic converter.... I drove 1500 miles with #10 coil bad, and #6 coil intermittently failing. No check engine light. Even then My MPG was not off by 5mpg, I saw a ~1mpg gain after fixing it.

This article goes into detailed information on why the CEL is not turned on with bad ignition on some errors.

If the truck is running OK, then your MPG issues are not mechanical failure related. Tires, Transmission/Differential, Driving habits

It's probably an OBDI truck.
