Noise level with DPF delete or DPF + CAT

Hey guys

I'm driving a 2009 F250 as a company truck. I also get to use it for personal use and just got permission to do a DPF delete. Already have my spartan tuner so I'm ready to go.

My main concern is noise, I leave at all times of the night.. and there will be some warmup idle in winter.

How much louder is it with both DPF and Cat removed? I'm thinking maybe I should leave the cat to keep it quiet. If there isn't much difference I'll just delete both. Thanks!

Good question. Are you doing just the delete or are you replacing the whole exhaust? I went with complete replacement and the exhaust note to me is...weird. Sitting in the drivers seat I hear a nice throaty rumble. People outside say it sounds like a loud *** jet taking off whenI'm on the pedal. I'm not sure how I'm getting two different exhaust sounds but it does. If I start it up and go stand by the tail pipe it sounds like a jet throttling up, and back down, over and over again. All I can think is the turbo is spooling up and down while it's sitting there but I have no idea if thats true or not.

In any case my system was a straight pipe down pipe back replacement and while idle is not bad it is fairly noisy when on the throttle.

Since it's a company truck I'm only deleting the DPF and Cat (if not too loud). The rest will be stock exhaust.

I'm not concerned about noise while on the pedal, just idle and high idle (no load) noise, while sitting infront of house.

I do love the turbo noises, and throaty sounds.. but I gotta keep the daily driver "decent".

Subscribing to this thread as well. I'm considering a 4" dp back system and wondering noise levels myself.

I love it too... I just don't want to be "that guy" remote starting his loud diesel at 3:00am when it's -25 below. My old 2003 7.3 was loud enough just with engine noise

Hardly any different, a more jet engine sound, but not loud.

No one will notice at 3am

At idle, mine is still quieter than a stock 6.0L. Don't delete just the DPF. Delete the whole DOC/DPF together. The DOC will probably clog sooner or later since it will never get hot enough to work as designed without the regen cycle.

I don't blame you on that at all. but that is one of the perks us diesel guys have, we can get the sound of a jet engine with little to no engine/turbo mods. Some people will hear it at 3am and some will not. i have come home from my friends house at 3 am before and ii have a 600 ft gravel driveway, my parents room is on the front of the house, same side as the driveway, they will have both windows open and my dad will not even know that i came home. i was at one of my friends that was just down the street and i came home and my cold idle was not even kicked down yet, so i am coming up the drivway taching like 1600rpm.

Gotta love the sound of the old 7.3L especially idle and low rpms.

What you are hearing is the EGR valve opening and closing. Some tunes have this feature so it will not stick shut.

I just deleted my DPFE & Cat with the AFE test pipe.
Superchips programmer to turn the regen & egr off.
I'm still running the stock muffler & tailpipe.

As noted I love the in cab noise I hear but I
HATE the spewing air noise you hear standing
Back at the exh pipe.

I have just the dpf delete and sound difference in the cab is almost none. It barely has a nice v-8 sound from the tail pipe when it's leaving the driveway. And yes you hear the air rushing through it at idle, i personally love it and there is no getting around it if you modify your exhaust.

Regular Idle.

High Idle

<a href="http://s68.photobucket.com/albums/i34/westwoodlands/?action=view&current=466AD387-B776-44EF-B6D5-3A55D40C5EF1-7615-00000752908EEAB1.mp4" target="_blank"><img src="http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i34/westwoodlands/466AD387-B776-44EF-B6D5-3A55D40C5EF1-7615-00000752908EEAB1.mp4" border="0" alt="Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos" /></a>

The sound difference is clearly localized to the area around the Exhaust. Im running 4" turbo back. When I just had the delete pipes, I'd guesstimate the notice was about 85% of what it is now. The truck was also not as throaty and had more air movement sounds.
