Well hello everyone. First of all I'm new to forums as well as new to exporers. I just bought a 2000 ex xlt 4.0 sohc 4x4 with 90000. Super clean and seems to run great. As I started researching them (after I bought) I'm seeing an awful lot of horror stories about trannys and timing chains and fuel issues. What I need to hear now is some praises before I unload this thing for fear of very costly repairs. I'm a doit yourselfer and have tackled anything mechanical with ok success. Still parts prices and my own labor bug me. Any comment would be appreciated.
WELCOME! I'm a newbie too... got a 2002 Sport with 83,000 last month. First, don't let these forums get you too concerned... I may be new to Ford Trucks, but I've been on my fair share of vehicle forums. When people make a posting, they're usually looking for help... not too many post good news. So don't worry too much about the horror stories. Second, make sure you only pay attention to issues with your model year series. As yours is a 2000 model, it's a second generation model (1992-2001), and as this was the height of the SUV craze, there's a whole bunch of them out there (meaning it should be easy to find parts and advice).
Like yours, mine was really clean and seems to be running great. In the meantime, I'm pulling all the specs I can, making sure to identify the differences between my Explorer and all the others. There's lots of combinations of drivetrains out there, some seemingly more troublesome than others, so it helps to know what you've got so you can narrow down the possible trouble spots later on down the road. Thank goodness the internet has a wealth of information (... though sometimes not very helpful).
Anyway... welcome to the group, and for now enjoy the drive.
I'm still driving around my 97 Merc Mountaineer and it hasn't been too bad. Its running with 165k on it and the stuff that I've had to replace is ball joints - 4 years ago/radiator - 6 mo ago/water pump -2 1/2 years ago.
All in all its not all that bad with the way it gets treated
