Restore help...

Hi, I'm new here and was hoping this forum could help me. I just found out this weekend that (after years of him not catching my subtle hints) my grandfather wants me to restore his truck for him. It's a '55 Ford F100. I'm not sure what engine it has, I know it's a V-8, but not sure which size.

Anyway, I'm looking for good places to get parts. I have an *** truck catalog. Has anyone used them and are they good to deal with? Also are there any other personal favorite parts suppliers?

The truck is going to be put back absolutely stock. It is about as stripped down as anything I have ever seen. I'm pretty sure this truck was bought for farm work, so there are NO frills or options of any type. The truck had some very minor work done on it in the mid-70's and has been inside for about the last 20 years. It was last driven about 4 years ago. I went out yesterday to see what I was getting myself into and it started the first time I pushed the button after sitting for 3 or 4 years. So, I'm off to a good start.

Thanks for any help.

So far this is the best to be, lots of knowledgeable people here and they have all got varying amounts of experience.
Some stockers, some custom.
Where are you located ?
If you're in Canada......good luck. Buying parts from the U.S. can get costly with the uneven exchange rate and the shipping adds up.
Your year of truck is fairly popular with aftermaket suppliers, mores some than other year trucks.
Who is a supplier........don't know but someone will direct you.

Diesel 1_99,

Welcome, I'm a new user also. I would suggest you consider the purchase of a shop manual, available here on this site (see banner ad). I personally have found that it answered many questions. I would also suggest you spend some time searching the archives for topics of interest. I spent about 2 weeks reading before posting the first time. Good luck with your resto. The folks here are incredibly knowledgeable and willing to help. Just ask and you will receive an avalanche of great ideas.

I would suggest you read John Niolon's excellent piece on the trials of a first time restorer.

Sorry, I didn't realize I missed the location part of my profile. I'm in Central Indiana, so the exchange rate won't be an issue.

I have a shop manual on the list of things to get. I have gone through the *** catalog and made a list, but I was wanting to find out if this was a good company to deal with or not. Their prices (compared to other things I have seen online) are the lowest that I've found thus far, so...I'll probably put an order in sometime soon.

This isn't really the first restore I've done. This will be the first truck though, but compared to the other project we are currently working on the 55 shouldn't be too bad.

Thanks for the info. I think this is probably the best forum I've been on.

Welcome aboard diesel1_99, as you've noticed already, there is a wealth of information in this site in the minds of the users (scary thought huh.. ). You'll be sure to find first time restorers up to guys (and gals) that have been doing this for some time. Chances are if you have a question about something, somone on here should have some sort of answer for you, or can help you find someone who does. Again, just wanted to welcome you to the nuthouse

Welcome diesel1-99! I second Jon's statement about the weath of info to be found here. I like the resto book called "How to Restore Your Ford Pickup". It is very user friendly for the novice, like me. Good Luck!
