It was most likely either a valentine 1 or a k40 built in. A buddy had a valentine one hardwired into his porsche and the first time I drove it I couldn't figure out what the red lights flashing on the instrument panel were for. When I realized they were accompanied with a warning sound over the stereo.... and then I saw a cop... I put 2 and 2 together.

Expensive systems but you get what you pay for. I know at least with the valentine ones you can continually upgrade the software to new radar systems without having to buy new hardware every 6 months.

Bad news is that with new era hand held and trigger activated radars, all detectors will just confirm

No they wont. The good ones (valentine and passport) will go off before you see them (whether its a couple miles on flat land or 1/2 in the mountains) so if they clock someone in front of you then you will know. The valentine system will also tell you if its behind or which side of the road they are on. With the updates they say where the speed cameras are too. And of course they work with the new GPS radar.

mine has a sensor in front and in back. Where do I find out what type it is? I have a **** on the dash that is two ***** in one. One part of the **** turns it to either a green setting or an orange setting to the led light by the ****. The other part controls volume of its beep. The gauge cluster has two led lights .one on each side of the top part of the speedo. They are orange then turn to red when it detects radar. I would like to find out the type so I could look up a manual on its settings and find out if there r upgrades for it. My truck is also a V10 so speeding is not something I really do but you can get a ticket for going 40 mph in a 25mph zone!
Thanks for the help!
Matt

Nice story ... too bad single if makes the whole theory worthless in real life.
Front and rear sensor, dual control volume, that sounds like Valentine One. Even the V1 manufacturer offers only remote display, lot of after-market offers hidden displays. Most often in rear view mirrors.

How so? I don't know about CA be here if the cops are out using radar there after more then one car. So that means they will be clocking someone in front of you. I said If meaning if they are clocking speeders. 90% of the time its on the interstates the other 10% its roads that speeders frequent. The troopers have have front and rear mounted radar they use going down the road but the county sheriffs and city cops must be parked to clock you.

radar detectors are worthless, if your getting hit by laser!...laser radar is point and shoot and only directed at one car, and by the time you hear the detector going off it's too late. the only time a radar detector is useful is if the cop has a radar that stays on and he is scanning traffic speed, you can pick up this signal from a ways away. these are usually KA or KU bands. most radar detectors you can buy now scan for KA, KU, X or laser radar. I have had a radar detector in every car or bike I have had for the last 15yrs and only have gotten 1 speeding ticket...knock on wood! that was only because I had my stereo too loud to hear it and by the time I saw the cop I looked up and my detector was screaming, cop even laughed when he saw my detector...
I don't generally speed but it happens

Can't believe FL is so behind.
Haven't seen a cop driving with radar on for at least couple of years on West Coast. Even in Nebraska cops hide behind the terrain and turn the radar on only when they see speeding vehicle. Fact that departments cut down the fuel funds might have something to do with it?
In Bay Area I see cops parking their cruiser back on the freeway ramp and walk with handheld radar to the freeway shoulder. In Oregon quite common is a cruiser parked on the back side of freeway overpass and hitting you from behind.
So the radar detector can only warn you when cops turn it on for someone in front of you. Useless when you are the only clocked vehicle.

The only part missing is where they bend you over! In Arizona where we still have this thing called the constitution we have made un manned photo radar illegal on the interstate system, and municipal photo radar tickets now have to have a disclaimer included that states your participation in this program is voluntary and you do not have to respond to this ticket unless it is included with a subpoena and delivered by a officer of the issueing court! Yeah, it's hot in the summer, but we have all the rest of the year to live free!

The only county here i can think of that does speed traps like that is Seminole county. They will stand on top of the overpass and use laser but for the most part the cops are not very smart with there traps. Once in a while you will see them standing on a sidewalk clocking people but for the most part they are parked in plain view in the median. Troopers give more tickets driving around then parked.

In CA the unmanned photo radars never existed, while red light cameras are allowed only in some jurisdictions. With hand-held radars now the cop can single out a car from 50 on the stretch of the freeway what gives them extra edge.
BTW on my travels I sleep in my truck occasionally. Last time in Phoenix didn't want to spend the night in the truck at 92F, but 1 hr driving north brought me to the most beautiful rest area I have ever seen. With higher elevation the temperatures were way lower.

Exclamation Info from a Recently Retired Police Officer.

First off, the Radar bands are X(oldest), K, and KA(newest). There is a big misconception about how effective radar detectors are. As a certified radar operator for 15 years, I can tell you that your odds are 50/50 of getting a ticket with a radar detector. In the State of Georgia, there is a process that you go through while operating a radar. The first is establishing a tracking history (visual observation of a vehicle speeding), now I know this sounds a little funny but I can tell you that after 6 months of running radar I could tell the speed of a vehicle just by observing it (within 2 to 3 mph). This is where you get caught , because officers know about how fast you are going without turning on the radar. When they see a vehicle that they know is traveling at excessive speed, they turn on the radar unit and lock it in. Next, you get a ticket. If you are lucky, someone is speeding in front of and you get tipped off by your detector (hence the 50/50)

Now, as far as Sheriff's and Police Dept's only being able to run stationary radar, think again. They can run radar while moving just like the State Patrol. Also, as far as them sitting in the median running radar, most States require anyone running radar (except for the State Patrol) to be visible for at least 500 feet. This is to keep local agencies from setting up speed traps (by hiding, remember the Duke's of Hazard).

Last, there are also radar units out there (Genesis II and Stalker) that have the capability to run same direction radar. This means if you are speeding and you run up behind a police car, he may already have your number and is just getting ready to write you a ticket. The same applies if you are in front of a police car and pulling away from it.

Now, for a little good news: In the State of GA the Law states that no local or municipal officer may write you a ticket unless you are traveling more than 10 mph over the posted speed, with the exception of school zones, construction zones, and any street where the speed limit is 25 mph or less. This does not apply to the GA State Patrol (GSP, or as we call them God's Special People). But GSP will normally follow the same guidelines.

Maybe you are way more gifted radar operator than average, maybe something else, but driving with the detector all the time, I had other operators turning their radars on my single truck when I was driving 15 mph below speed limit in 75 zone.
And it wasn't single incident.
maybe they just got bored?

Were there other vehicles on the road with you? Within about a half mile or so in front or behind you? Was it a two lane/ four lane/ divided highway. The reason I ask is that you may not have been the actual target. The radar unit puts out a very wide beam of radio waves.

That was definitely turned on me, since they turned it on when I was less than 200' away and there was no other vehicle in 1/4 mile radius. One of those cops pulled me over later on and gave me 1 hr inspection including weighting my pickup and 7000 lb boat with no ticket given. He was nice guy and we had some chat about illegal haulers abusing the law, but cost me 1hr off my schedule.
I have no objection against necessary controls, but can't shake impression that in last years for lot of PD catching the highway speeders is higher priority than chasing bank robbers and rapist. At least it brings better revenue
