Possible Coolent problem

2004 F350 SD KR 4x4. I was getting on 485 (a major road in Charlotte, NC), when I got on the hit the gas and for a few seconds had black smoke, my SGII was showing EOT of 207, ECT of 195, BST of around 10 to 15, EBP of around 25. Once the black smoke cleared up it was running fine. I was mainly driving between 65 to around 90 mph, I looked every so often at the SGII and at one point the EOT was 220, ECT of 199, boost between 5 to 10 (depending on who I was passing), EBP around 20 to 25. Could this possibly be the oil cooler starting to give signs of failing? Since the truck is still under warrenty I would like to get stuff working good before the warrenty goes away. During this time I wasn't towing anything, it was fully unloaded except for me.

You can't reference ect/eot deltas when under any condition but totaly warmed up, 20 miles hiway speeds, and on level ground and steady throttle. When your in the throttle or going down a hill they mean nothing.

Well before I was on the highway I was kind of stop and go at every light, during most of the time I was level ground on the highway since most of the highway was empty I had a steady speed of 70 mph for around 20 miles, at the point I was reading around 15 to 20 degree difference in EOT/ECT

You have to take the readings when on level ground and steady throttle, totally warmed up of course. Stop & go don't count.

Well at 15-20* highway speed cruise set at 60-65 on flat ground after 5-10min your coolers are going south. Just remember you must do both oil and egr cooler but you should do a flush first but have parts in hand.

I agree with you pop. I would just like to see him do the readings properly before doing all the work.

JonArmy,

Just for giggles you might check EOT/ECT deltas using the FoMoCo TSB 09-8-3 method, which describes running the truck at WOT to build boost.

It seems credible to check deltas at cruise, but I have never seen anything in writing that differs from the Ford TSB.

After I checked my EOT/ECT last week with the method described in the TSB
(using a Snap-On Modis scan tool), I hit up several FoMoCo factory techs, and they all describe performing the tests per the TSB.

When I had the Modis hooked up I did notice at cruise the delta was narrower than when performing the WOT tests, so I am going to hook it up and do some more testing under varying conditions.

My deltas run ECT 194* EOT 198* and when pulling my 14k 5er i see an increase of 10* each and when pulling a 7% grade in 90*+ weather they run 218* and 228* and the fan sounds like a jet plane.

I also disagree with any readings at WOT. I don't care about a tsb and don't know of any techs that recommend it. Your truck/ your money and/or your labor.

Well, I can say I am definitely interested in TSB's, I have gleaned quite a bit of information from them in the past.

But as I said, at least I am open to different points of view.

Exact numbers I had Dieselpop, when light, freeway speed, 194/198, 105* ambient.

Numbers were 208/216 when tested as Ford suggests.

My new oil cooler will hold 15* spread in stop & Go uphill,downhill,45mph-90mph it dont matter what the driving condition it will hold the spread usually 8-10* Hwy and 4-6* city
Havent towed so IDK about that but some people say theres will hold a 15* spread while in tow
Its good to have a controlled test but dont stress about it to hard

Just by your EOT of 220* I can tell it was fulley warmed up

EOT 220 and a ECT 199
your oil cooleer is on its way out

and if its the same oil cooler it came with in 04 then I dont think its going to flush very good Its probably packed full
If its warrenty good Id try to get a new oil cooler put in SOON

do you have a round or square egr cooler

Thanks for the info, I will take a look tomorrow to see the shape of egr cooler, of course I bought this truck with only 38k miles on it and of course not knowing the previous owner maintance log, I'm trying to get everything right. Of course I am keeping a detailed log in the truck so I know whats been replaced, etc. I have already done a oil drain and used Motorcraft oil and filter (15W-40), changed the air filiter and cleaned the egr valve. Around the end of the month I will also be draining the HFCM and change the fuel filiters do another oil change, possibly change air filter if need.

hope you have a round egr cooler that should buy you alittle time to try to flush and get a coolant filter on it and sart cleaning the sysatem out so its clean when the time comes to change that oil cooler out

dont rely on the dealer to flush it its better if you do that part yourself It takes a day to do a good job and reverse flush it and run the cleaners and stuff
