Ok, another poll. Just curious what people think the best setup would be for a daily driver and fuel mileage, 3/OD, 5speed or AOD. Figuring all thing equal as far as motor and rear gears and 2 wheel drive.
Lots of time on the highway, I would go AOD since I am lazy about shifting.
Around town, I would leave it stock.
For me, I drive my 82 F250 around town for errands and then the 9 miles each way to and from work. Only 2 miles of that is over 45mph. As such, an overdrive is not worth the effort to install.
If you want a daily driver that gets good mileage, IMHO, go buy a civic.
Guess I should have been clearer. It's mostly around town but frequent trips to "the city" of 100 to 150 miles round trip. Yea I could always just go buy a car but I like my truck so that's what I drive, just interested in getting the best mileage I can out of it.
If the truck has something like 2.73 rear gears, adding OD to that will only LOWER your mpg cause you'll be lugging the engine more than anything!
For a daily town driver, once in a while highway runner, if your not geared down to low (3.55, 4.10's) I would get a 4 speed standard, or C6 3 speed auto.
How much are you planning on spending? You can get old Civics or Accords for $400-$600 that get you from point A to Point B with 30mpg. I had a Prelude that I got for $300 that got 32mpg....
I like both my trucks. I have the diesel for longer and heavier trips, and the gasser for around town.
Back to the poll: So what truck are we starting with? 300/302/351/460? 3 speed? Axle gears?
I haven't voted 'cause I don't see what I have, which I'm hoping will become a reasonable DD. Doing LOTS of work on a new 351W (Edelbrock carb jetted leaner, no cat, true duals, and massaging the exhaust ports) that I'm hoping will get the mileage up. And, I'm adding the Hughes Perf Fuel Miser converter to the tranny (C6). If those changes don't get me up to 15 MPG from the current 13.1 I'll swap the 3.50 gears out for the 3.25's sitting on the shelf.
That'll still leave me with great torque and the ability to pull pretty much what I want, without spending big bucks on a tranny swap or risking destroying an AOD.
Well mine is a 300, 3/OD, 3.55 and 31X10.50's but that's not what the point of this is. I know on paper the AOD would be the best because of it's .61/od on mine. What I was asking was given any motor/gears/tire combo what does everyone think would render the best performance as a daily driver, with our style trucks, on combined city/highway driving. I picked the 3 available OD trans on the poll because of the highway part. In other words, if you could have any one of these trans in YOUR rig as a daily driver which one would you choose.
And yes I know I could go get a Civic but that really doesn't have anything to do with this. It's just and opinion poll.
Cant beat a good ole 460 with a c-6 3spd auto with 4:10 gears.I got plenty of pulling power and my engine usualy hangs around 1500 to 2200 rpm on in town and hwy but get it on the interstate the 460 turning 3000rpm by the time I reach 75mph.Most of the time it gets run 55-60 mph and I get 13.5mpg.GIven the choices I would go with the 5spd
In terms of mpg, the AOD is still an automatic & it's power consumption is not much better than a C6, so IMHO it can't compete with a equivalent manual transmission for economy.

But less driver effort than a manual.
Words from a man who owned an AOD, switched to a C6, and is now compiling the bits to install a manual. So, Ken, where do you stand on that quest?

Yes it is opinion.
If I was going to swap out the drivetrain in mine for what I really want, it would be a Cummins 4bt or 6bt with either an E4OD/4R100 or an Allison behind it and a Dana 70 rear axle with 3.55 gears.
The issue with the AOD is the large jump from drive to overdrive. It can cause bogging on the highway with a loss of mileage. All in how you drive it. That is why most later overdrives have a ratio more like .82 to 1.
Why limit yourself to only those trannies? nv4500?

Stang - You hit the nail on the head. While Ken Blythen didn't mention it on his recent post, he has on posts on other threads. Basically he said that the jump to OD on his AOD was so great that he couldn't run in it unless he was running something like 75 on the highway. And, that it actually hurt gas mileage.
So, unless you are going to run 4.10's, which brings the effective drive ratio to ~3.00:1, the OD is too much gear.
I have to agree about the AOD. Like I said, it should be the best "on paper" but my plans are for a 5 speed. And to be honest I didn't include the the granny 5 speeds because they're basically heavy duty 3/od's with an extra granny gear and didn't think about them. Got an old 48 Jeep out back to cover the low gear driving and an Explorer for the higher fuel mileage. But seems like at least 80% of the time I'm driving my pickup because I like it.
Yea I did read it and think it's the way I'll probably go. Had one in my old 97 F150 and liked it.
The profile is filled out, at least as far as my pickup. Never thought about how to list any others. Guess that's just another sign of ol' fart's disease.
And to be honest, my mind was already made up when I started this thread. I had hashed it over allot before I decided. So thought it would be interesting to see what others would do with there truck given the opinion of making it the daily driver. Sittin' back all day waiting on the doctors to decide when they're going to let me go back to work causes the ol' mind to wonder.
