I have a 1966 f250 2wd work truck, just put power disk brakes in front & replaced all drag links & tie rod ends. Now I want to install power steering. I purchased a 1971 f250 2wd power steering unit and want to install it in my 1966. If anyone out there has done this or something similar I would appreciate all the input, (do's & don'ts) you can give. Upon my first investigation it looks like the box will fit, but now that I look a little closer it looks like maybe not. any info. will be appreciated. thanks Payniac (also a 1970 F250 4x4 highboy with a 428)yahoo!
John, I'm not understanding what you mean by trans. director? I'm running a c6 with a small block. It also looks as though the box I purchased when installed would conflict with the frame (like it 's too long), but I have not actually set it in place. The column replacement as you state shouldn't be an issue, just more work. Thanks again Payniac
Pay, It makes a lot of difference. "Tranny director" Floor shifted, or column shifted, three on the tree or auto.
All 2wd steering gears will swap between 65 & 79. The power gear has hydraulic controls on top and requires a ps column be used with it. The total length is the same on both systems, but the joint is moved towards the firewall on the ps system, and requires the column to be changed with the gear.
If your truck is still using the old I6 or 352 perches, changing the left side to the angled forward ps perch for the 360 will make it fit perfectly.
I have made these changes so I have been there and done that. If I can help you further gaing creature comforts, let me know.
John, thanks again. I have dropped in a 289, because at the time it was available and fit the trans that powered my I6. The mounts that hold the motor I custom fabricated, (not pretty, but they work). After all it's just my work truck. I guess this weekend I will attempt the change and see what other complications that may arise (my header clearence). Thanks again Mark Payne, payniac in No. Ca.
How did it turn out. I have been wondering if the gear boxes would simply swap. I sawped frame and all(66 onto a 70) and had to swap columns as well, did you?
Gear boxes swap out & bolt up exactly the same. The rub is you'll need to remove the corner of the spring mount & change the column. Did my '65 a few weeks ago
