Winch size

I'm looking to add a winch to the front of my 02, 7.3 Supercab. Is 12,000 lb. enough? I'm not going hardcore offroading. I just think it would be a great utility tool to have as a just-in- case measure. I am placing the order for a Road Rhino WIY ( weld it yourself) bumper kit this week to replace both front and rear bumpers.

For most, the 12k should be enough. Usually you want 1.5 X's your weight, winches are rated with single line pull, so if you get stuck pretty good, probably be using ****** block to double up the power.

Built my bumper, and bought my winch for the same reasons. I bought a Warn 9000 ce. Mine is portable so I can store it in the bed of my truck rather than sticking it out in the elements 24/7. It weighs 87 lbs and anything bigger jumped to at least 125. For the limited use, it wasnt worth lugging around the additional pounds and spending 4-500$ more.

The warn ce series is much faster than the M series. not disappointed in my purchase.

yeha, 12K will be plenty.

Be sure to pick up a 24+K ****** block, using a double line pull.....cable/rope routed through pulley and anchored to vehicle you will double the pulling force to 24K. That should get you out of most situations.

Just remember to point the opening of the hook toward the sky and place a tarp/jacket/or a packing blanket over the winch cable toward the center.

With the hook opening pointed toward the sky the cable will head for the ground instead of whipping up and the fabric draped over the cable will act as a sail and slow the cable if it happens to break and try to whip in to the air.

to me that is not a good price if you have to weld it. unless you have a cheap way to get sticks or wire and gas that is going to get $ before you are done. and how good a welder are you. it will need some good weld to hold 12000 lbs of pull. if you get it to hot it will bend and not line up, just my 0.02
and for $3000 i can get ranch hand front and back bumps in town put on.

i did some swapping around with a friend of mine a year or so ago and wound up with a 10000 pound winch. its been in the un opened box on my shop floor for a while.
iv had a few trucks with winches and as soon as you mount it all your friends call in the middle of the night to pull them out. lol

Just another thing to keep in mind -- I don't have a winch on my F250, but I do have one on my work truck, which is a Silverado. With the 4X4 and the extra weight of the winch (permanently mounted with brush guards) that thing goes through tires like they are crackers, it's ridiculous!! If it was my personal vehicle, I would store it in the bed and just put it on when you need it. We have another truck set up this way, mounted a receiver hitch on front and attach winch to that, no tire problems with that one!

with most you cant go bigger than a 9.5k for a receiver mount.
