I have a built 302 c6 in a 78 f150 reg cab long bed,
I have had this carb for awhile and i could never get it to run just right. Me and my dad cant figure how to get the perfect AF mixture so itll rev up without any hesitation or bog down when i punch it. Ive read my manual for tuning procedures. I just cant get it to run right on top of that 302. My exhaust spits out black smoke and there is a strong gas smell around my truck. any ideas or help on this problem? id hate to have to take it to get tuned and pay out the a$$ if you know what i mean. any help would be highly appreciated.
what size carb is it? im assuming its a 600 (1405) which might be a little rich for your 302 and you might need to make a jet change. also check the gasket inbetween the carb and in manifold it could be leaking best way is to use starter fluid and give it a couple of quick sprays and if the rpms spike you got a leak same with the manifold its self. you might just have a leak some where...
CID x RPM / 3456 x VE % = CFM
302 x 6500 / 3456 x 90% = 511.198 cfm
thats at 90% Volumetric Efficiency and your trucks probly more in the mid 80s depending on your mods and at 90% your only pulling 511 and thats at 6500 rpms too and at 2500 ur still only at 196 im sorry to say this but i think you need a smaller carb....
That carb is fine for a 302, no worries. No way it runs that rich out of the box.
When you say spits black smoke and stinks of gas do you mean all the time? At idle? Have you looked into the carb with the truck running? What you're describing sounds like a sunk float. I had one on a 302 with a bad float and at idle you could see gas seeping around the metering rod cover. Same deal - ran like crap, smoked, stunk of gas.
