I experienced a similar situation when travel this June 2011. My 97 Aerostar just died suddenly on I-10 near El Paso TX . It was a hot afternoon(108), but my Aero was not overheat. About an hour later, why waiting for the tow truck, I tried it and it just started as nothing happened. Since then it just run normallly. Could it be water in the tank? or fuel pump is about done? or ?
I bought a non-Ford van fairly cheap because of the engine cutting off then would restart within a minute. The previous owner had it to the dealer and an independent shop and neither one found the problem. I pulled every electrical connection I could find under the hood and sprayed it with contact cleaner before replacing it. The problem went away and it has not returned for the ten years that I still have the van. Do not know what the cause was but it is cheap enough to give it a try. You might be like me and get lucky.
Those symptoms sound exactly like what a failing fuel pump will do. It is also exactly what all the new aftermarket pumps I have tried do too. New Motorcraft pumps have worked flawlessly for me, but they are expensive enough that you will want to be positive that it is the problem. If you can get a fuel pressure gauge, hook it up while the problem is occurring.
Something else to think about. Your Windstar probably has a fuel pump cutoff switch that is supposed to turn off the fuel pump in the event of an accident. These things do go bad from time to time and will shut off your engine. Your owner's manual should tell you where it's located as access is required to reset it. You might be able to just jumper that switch temporarily and see if the problem goes away. Just don't run with it like that for a long time. It's there for your safety.
