it was a '89 302. dropped a valve somewhere before 100K miles. 3.55 gears, i knew of a neighbor that had a '78 bronco with a np435 trans. i beileve he bought it new. id rather have the "creeper 1st" 4 speeds over the 5 speed o/d just for those times you need a deeper 1st and want to save some clutch life, like pulling a boat up out of the boat ramp. gives you a deeper reverse as well. o/d doesnt add much mpg savings. i did a test once one week without using o/d in my ranger, milage only dropped 1-1/2 mpg. sure over a long distance it would add up, but on a 24 mile round-trip commute, no big deal.

I know you were referring to a 302 engine, since the format you used to describe both trucks was: Year vintage / Engine / Transmision. The mistake was writting a 303 instead of 302. Anyway, yes, there have been Broncos with 4 speed manuals. One popular swap also is placing a ZF 5 speed which is HD and would give you a granny gear you would love.

NP435

T-18

These might help in identifying what's in it. And I have NO idea why the images won't embed.

Both the T-18 and the NP435 have significantly low 1st gears. T-18 1st is 6.32:1 and the NP435 1st is 6.68:1. I'd be happy with either unit though I really like the 435 my brother has behind the 300 is his early Bronco. (yes, he stuffed a 300 under the hood of a '74).

Both would be great, although I'd pick the NP-435. It's slightly lighter (due to the top being made out of aluminum), and has a lower granny. Really nice transmission.
