The lobe and the lifter were the same and it was all caused by improper lube and break in. This was one of those live and learn situations for my son and me too. The first screw up was his I just got involved to try and help him straighten it out.

Like I said he had never put in a new cam and neither had I. He probably ripped into the cam box and thought the instructions for break in were packing paper. I hope he's learned a lesson.

Anyway, we got it together late yesterday evening. We did it the hard way in the truck, but we managed. We prelubed and primed the oil pump and everything fell into place. We followed the directions to a T on the cam break in. (1500 to 2000 RPM for 20 minutes).

I was a little worried about the initial start up, but it came of without a hitch. We had the timing close enough and the carb had gas. When we turned her over she fired right off and immediately went to 60 PSI on the oil pressure and we held it to the minimum 1500 rpms and got it steady at 2000 rpms and held it for close to 25 minutes.

We then idled it down and zeroed in the timing and a little carb adjusting. Then my son and his buddy took it on a little road trip. Everything appears to be okay. For now I think we have the situation under control.

Thanks for all the help.

Ditto.

You've probably already done it, but the only thing I'd add is to make sure he gets his oil and oil filter changed immediately after the break in run. You don't want that break in grease and any metal particles left in the motor.

If you need anything else, just holler.
