Hi folks,It's been a while since I have been on the board. It seems I have so much going on anymore I don't have the time to spend on the boards anymore. So, I usually end up visiting when I have questions. I have an old '93 Explorer that we use for a yard mule here. It's a nasty looking thing but it does the job here. It's days of running the roads are long gone. We keep it locked in 4WD Low and drag stuff to and from the shop and yard. It has the 4L V6 and automatic transmission. For some time now the automatic front hubs have been going it and out which makes for some really nasty noises and a lot of jerking when it's pulling something. I see that Advance Auto Parts sells a set of manual locking hubs for this vehicle. Here is a link to the manual hub set on their website. Buy Milemarker Hubs - 4WD 428 at Advance Auto Parts My questions are, do I need anything else to do this converesion, and has anyone here had any experience with doing this particular conversion. I have no particular preference for going with Advance Auto so if anyone else knows of a better deal I am open to it.Later Folks...
there is a special tool you will need. it looks like a very large socket with four tabs sticking out of the business end of it. ill try to get a picture up of it soon.
You will also need a "conversion kit" to replace the wheel bearing lock nut that comes with the auto hubs with the wheel bearing lock nuts that fit manual hubs.
FWIW, I tried the Mile Marker hubs and they both broke after a few years. I might suggest you find a set of Warns if you still want to go with manual hubs.
Another idea -- It's rare, but I have heard of people who get into those auto hubs and either weld something or do something else that permanently locks the hubs. Where your truck is just a "yard mule" that might be the cheapest way to fix those hubs.
