I have one more question about the 7.3 psd to help with my choice between the v10 and 7.3 I figured out what the fuel cost difference is but since Ive never owned a diesel before I was wondering what the maintenance on these motors was like. I do my own maintenance on my truck now but i am think of taking a diesel class at my local college to help me out with the diesel. thanks
They are maintained similar to any gas engine. Just keep the oil clean and at good levels. The fuel filter gets changed around 15 k. Beyond that, they are mostly self sufficient.
The work yourself is a major bonus. The cost of labor is what really drives up costs. Parts are not cheap, but not out of line for these either. If taken care of, they go a long time in between major maintenance. And they are designed to last!
Since you do your own maintenance, the cost won't be significantly different, and may even be cheaper in the long run..
Forget that local college class. Stick around here, ask questions, and at least SOMEONE "has seen and been through before" whatever problem you can possibly encounter.

The diesel has no spark plugs or wires to change, but the oil change at around 5,000 miles takes 15 quarts. And as mentioned, the fuel filter should be changed at around 15,000 miles on the diesel.
The real issue on operating costs is how you plan on driving the vehicle. Four miles a month running around the corner to the grocery store will favor the V10. Four hundred miles a week pulling a trailer will favor the diesel.
Welcome to FTE your bound to learn A LOT I for sure have. IMHO the V10 is a waste of metal, anything the V10 can do the 7.3 can do better, mileage, power, reliability, etc...
Like Pop said anything than can happen has happened to someone here, the guys here are great theve walked me threw thing I was unsure about HECK a year and a half ago I didnt know almost anything and last weekend I swapped out the my turbos and did my up-pipe gaskets prior to that I pulled my new turbo apart to make sure everything was clean and in working order. And if your really lucky a couple brothers might live in your area and will be more than willing to help you work on your truck if you need a hand
Listen, if you like to do your own maintenance and mods, to me it's a no brainer: 7.3 all the way.
I have had my 7.3L powered Excursion for quite some time now and when I was looking for a new-to-me F250 a few years ago, I started looking for a V10.
Unfortunately, I could not stand the power curve on the V10. When I need to jump on it and get around someone, I need my vehicle to move like RIGHT NOW. Without a power adder for the V10 (for which kits are not available, unless you get lucky and find a used, discontinued Kenne-Bell supercharger kit), the V10 just seems very....well, to me it just seemed gutless when I punched it.
My 7.3L in stock form was the same way, but it's no longer stock, and gutless isn't a term anyone would use after riding in my truck.
Do yourself a HUGE favor and take a test drive of the V10 of your choice. Then take a test drive in a 7.3L PSD. And if you plan on modding it, try and find someone with a modded 7.3L and have them give you a ride.
Where are ya located? If you're anywhere near Monterey, I'll give you a ride.
Thanks everybody for your replys I will be driving about 30 miles a day but its all short trips but I can leave it running when i drop off and pick up my kids from school and I can let it warm up in the morning. Also i live in southern cali in the orange county area.
If you're ever in my area feel free to hop in the passenger seat of my truck. Mine is lightly modded (as far as possibilities are concerned) but has the big easy ones done to it.
Thanks Marv. I actually eased up a tad and lifted early when it seemed like I mighta been causing you to be just a little uncomfortable. I wasn't sure, but I figured eh, it was enough as it was.
When I had Flawless in the truck and gave him a ride, him being a younger lad than both of us, I figured he'd like it if I kept the pedal buried longer so he got a bit of a faster ride!
V10 BOOOO 7.3 YAY even the older ones arnt bad at all my parnets had a 95 crew cab long box auto with 239,000 they replaced the tranny for a hd one and two injectors and they have owned it since 2000 i never really liked 7.3s till i got one and i love the truck pulls good i get about 20mpg and its a beast!
