I have a set of those 70's unilug fin/fan blade wheels. I picked them up at a swap meet for 200 bucks with 2 sets of lugs. They are somewhat corroded, dull and have about 5 cotes of paint in the fins. I talked to a poishing shop and the guy told me that all he does with them is plastic media blast the paint then glassbeed the corrosion off. I was wondering if anyone has done this at home before. he wants 100 bucks a wheel to clean and polish them. i figure if i can clean them it will be cheaper. I want to repaint the fins red to match the truck. Them have the whole thing clearcoated. I have a large sandblaster and s small spot blaster.
Hi-
Definitely do it yourself. Use stripper on the parts your gonna paint, it's less of a pain and cheaper than blasting it. PMB on the rest of the wheel will come out like a satin finish, fine for clearcoat. If you want it real shiney then polish them yourself after very light blasting. If you go this route you'll see why he wants 100 bucks each. Clearcoat is probably your better idea.
There are so many coats of paint i might need a lot of stripper. What do you recommend. I was hopping the bead blasting would be quicker. Do you think i could sandblast the paint first then beadblast over it to smooth them up. If i clear them afer the bead blast they will basically look like a stock alum wheel? What kind of clear should i use? I hae friends at two different body shops so i'd have them do that. But i's spray the red in the fins.
