Trying to choose between an 05 super duty f250, lariat, crew cab, v10, gas 4x4 truck with 50k miles and an 06 super duty f350, diesel, lariat, crew cab, nav, tonneau cover, 4x4 with 112k miles. Both vehicles are roughly the same price. I will be towing a 23' toy hauler. Most of my driving will be short distances to work and the every month use of the trailer. My question is: will one have the advantage over the other for longevity and towing? Is more mileage a real concern for either vehicle? Currently I tow my trailer with a Suburban.
WARNING: Lets stay away from the V10/Diesel banter and focus on the OP's question.
Big can of worms you opened there. That toy hauler will be heavy, but not unheard of by a long shot. The V10 will tow it, no doubt. But the 6.0 will tow it better. However, you say your daily driving will be short. Diesels dont like that. So it depends on how much towing you will be doing and your personal preference. No doubt people will say I'm wrong and the V10 is the way to go, and I love the V10 dont get me wrong. It is pretty equally matched in highway towing capability to a 7.3, but the 6.0 is a stronger motor than the 7.3, therefore also stronger than the V10.
Also, some people will tell you to stay away from the 6.0. Ignore that. The 6.0 had a lot of issues early in live. It was the ugly baby of the Ford family. But it grew up into a beautiful motor a few years later. The 2006 6.0 is one of those supermodel motors.
sounds of your use... the lower mile, lower maint V10 should work great for you.
the V10 is very reliable and the 3V is very powerful. the 6.0 seems to be getting better but they still have issues if they were not taken care of..ect 6.0 owners can help you more there.
but IMO over 50k less miles is well worth it, plus the piece of mind of the V10 and the short distances you drive it would be the best buy.
Diesel Pros:
Higher resale value*
More power per unit of fuel than gasoline
Generally more MPG (especially in a 6.0)
Good reputation for longevity
Depending on your local laws, you may be SMOG exempt.
Diesel Cons:
Higher initial cost*
Generally higher maintenance/repair costs
Fuel is usually 5-20 cents more per gallon than gasoline.
Cannot sit for long periods of time, or drive short distances.
Gas Pros:
Fuel is widely available
Fuel is generally cheaper
Maintenance and repair costs may be less than on a diesel
Does not benefit a "warm up" period and does well on short drives
Gas Cons:
Generally less power than a diesel motor offered that same model year
Not SMOG exempt
Generally worse mileage than an equally equip diesel truck of the same model year
Gas motors generally have less longevity. There are plenty of exceptions to that rule, just don't rely on it happening.

I agree. That is a very low mile V10 for the same price as a 100k mile 6.0. 50k miles on a V10 is nothing to be worried about. Plenty of life left.
Diesel costs 40 cents more per gallon where I live.
For what you plan to use it for I'd go with the V10 because it has less miles. If I was towing all the time I would go diesel because it would be more cost effective MPG wise. You will not like the MPG of a V10 compared to a diesel, but you plan to use it like I use mine and I couldn't justify the extra up font cost of the diesel. In your case they are even money to buy, but your are paying for 50,000 miles.
Good info Trey! If it were me I would go with the diesel for the higher level of options, but seeing that the question is posted by someone who is currently running a gas powered suburban I think I would recommend he go with the V-10 as it would be a more familiar platform for him as far as maintenance and general performance expectations, plus those miles are hard to pass up! Either way he chooses they are both great trucks, but I would not recommend a 6liter as a first diesel unless the owner was a tech with vast knowledge going in!
Jim...& fat Monty
Well, looks like gas is the winner. Thanks for all of your input- it really helped. Didn't/don't know too much about the diesel trucks other than they tow better and generally have a longer life span. Is $36k too much for a '10 F250 xlt gas 4x4 with 21k miles? They seem about the same cost as a used diesel.
def high IMO the 5.4 in a crew cab super duty 4x4 is kinda on the edge of "just enough" power having driven a few compared to my V10s. it'll get the job done but it wont feel like a rocket doing it.
in the situation your in the 05 V10 would be a better option.

I'd go with an 06 or newer 6.0 Diesel. I've owned both. I now have an 07 F350 6.0 Diesel. The V10 is a great engine but horrible gas mileage has been my experience.
