cat removal ?

I have 1996 XLT with a 351 in it. A while back I put a cat back exhaust system in it consisting of a 3" in/out muffler and a split tailpipe. I would like to remove the 2nd cat and replace it with a 3" piece of pipe. I would reinstall the O2 sensors. The 2nd cat has a 3" inlet but a horribly restricted outlet. I want to take full advantage of the 3" muffler. Other than honking off the feds, will this work ok?

You will probally run into problems due to your second o2 senser. Then your truck will run bad. I would replace the second cat with a high flow one.

I was able to remove both of my cats with no problems at all. I did remove the rear cat first and also had no problems. My truck is a mass air truck and I am sure that helps with how the truck runs. Good luck.

96 is different. They added another o2 sensor to prevent catatlytic converter removal. Fortuneatly the aftermarket has come to the rescue. They now make a device that plugs in place of the second o2 sensor, which lies to the computer to make it think the second cat is still in place. Check with Summit maybe.

Is there some reason you want to keep the first converter? As long as your hacking the feds off, why not ditch both cats?

I would think because the first cat acts like a y-pipe. He can cut off the second cat and weld in a pipe, but by cutting off the first cat he will need to bend pipe to get it all to work.

Yes, the first cat functions as a Y pipe and I didn't want to mess around with bending pipe. Does anyone know any more about the second 02 sensor eliminator? It may make the most sense to clamp the replacement pipe in place rather than welding it. That way if the truck won't run and I can't find this sensor plug I can always go back to the high flow cat with the factory sensor.

If you're motivated enough you can remove the first cat, cut a "door in it, gut it, and then weld back shut. If you do it right, get it dirty , and make your cutout face the tranny it won't really be visible. Just a thought, I've never done this

When they came off my 92 I took two turn downs with the same OD/ID and welded them onto the two pipes right after the first o2 sensor so that they angled toward each other. They had two have the ends cut as they actually crossed in the same space. This gave me an oval shaped pipe when they were welded together. I then took a peice of diesel exhaust that had the correct offset to get around the tranny crossmember and squished the end to an oval shape and welded it on. It was 3" pipe. If you want I can get the part #'s. It was all stuff hanging on the local parts store exhaust rack. If you REALLY want I'll try to borrow a dig. camera and get some pictures. If so, somebody will have to tell me how to post pictures. I haven't got a clue how.
