Wont Start

First things first. I am not a mechanic, and I am new to the diesel side of things. I have a 96 F250ps. for a couple months it has been shutting off while driving, or if I hit a bump, let off the e brake, shut the doors to hard, that kind of stuff. I thought it might be electrical (chip). However, yesterday it shut off and It will not restart. I am getting power and it cranks but it just wont turn over. Gut says fuel pump or something associated with it. Can you guys help out a complete greenie. I need this truck for duck season.

Based upon the trouble you've been having, if you have a chip in the PCM, I would check to be sure it is not loose. Sounds to me like an electrical issue as well and if the truck is chipped I would look there first. Make sure it is plugged in all the way and secure it in place with a big 'ol piece of Hillbilly Chrome (Duct tape).

If that's not it, I would check the plug that goes through the firewall into the PCM. Maybe unplug it and make sure the connections all look clean and then plug it back in and make sure the bolt that holds it to the PCM is tight.

Start there first and we can look into more complicated stuff if that doesn't take care of it.

Welcome to the site! There is a lot of info here for us newbies!

Without getting off course it is always wise to have a scanner for this truck as it will essentially offer insight with the codes that are displayed. The pigtail for the scanner is under the ashtray portion of the dashboard on the bottom. This is a OBD 2 system (on board dignostics).Just guessing ,there could be a lack of fuel as a result of a cloged or pluged up fuel pick up line in the tank that could starve the engine from fuel. This hapened to me while driving down the road on a 1/4 tank of fuel,it just cut out and died at 60mph.Perhaps switchin the tank selector switch to the other tank AFTER filling the fuel bowl in the valley of the engine if it is less than half full.THis fuel filter has the black plastic 5inch round cap that unscrews out and is pulled straight up.Good luck on this fix

If you pull the emergency brake assembly off the driver side kick panel, the PCM is behind there. If the truck has a chip is will be plugged into the front of the PCM. What makes you think the truck is chipped?

I bought this truck all souped up! It had 100hph perfomance injectors, a chip with boost and pyrometer gauges, and piped propane. I have taken out the injectors and switched the propane from performance to economy and only use that when towing.(I got real tired of the black smoke)
I will go home tonight and check the chip. Does it take any special tools to pull the e brake plate off?
What is a cps? told you I was a greenie

Yep, I would replace the cam position sensor (CPS) it is only about $20 and takes about 10 minutes.

When you get a cps, get one from ford or IH, not a parts store one if you can help it. Still only about 20-25 bucks.
