Mirror Extenders

Is anyone any using any kind of side mirror extender? Even with the mirrors all the way out, I can't see around the back of my 32' gooseneck when I have a load of hay. Any suggestions? I use to have a set of clamp-ons that stuck out 24" that I used with my 5th wheel but they are missing and many times were a hazard in close quarters or narrow roads. Any suggestions?
Thanks. 20,000 miles and loving it. This baby sure can pull.

That's a good question, you have a unique situation towing oversize loads. These mirrors are designed well to see around a trailer at the maximum 102" legal limit, but I'm sure as a farmer you tow stuff far wider!

I'm curious to see what folks come up with...never seen extended mirrors on a truck with tow mirrors!

Cool, yeah, this is a new one.

By the looks of it, the factory tow mirrors on the Ram seem to stick out farther than ours, but the mirror is smaller. If you spot a Ram with these, give them a look.

If you are pretty handy, maybe you could take one of the Ford tow mirrors apart, see how the extending mechanism works. May be possible to get longer hardware, reset the motor stops (prob just a limit switch) and fab up your own. I have no idea if the mirror uses a screw drive or a straight gear track.

If you look at the front wheel wells of road tractors (Kenworth) some drivers have mirrors mounted up there, usually just little spot mirrors. Might be a way to mount something like this to your front bumper/grille area.

And then, the hi tech solution. Get a back up camera system where you can add a couple extra lenses, and you could mount them wherever you want as long as you have enough cable.

The trailer deck is 102" but my bale bundles stick out about 6" on each side, just enough to make the mirrors useless at their maximum extension. I have to swerve a little to get a glimpse behind me, okay on a back road but not cool on the highway. I saw a Chevy with a snap-on extension that was form fitted the outside edge of the factory mirror. Maybe somebody has one for a 2011 Ford.

These mirrors are good, but they really could out out another 2 inches.
You cannot easily see the back of a 101" trailer.

No luck finding a specific extender for the 2011 SD. Guess I'll try one the generics. I'll keep you all posted.

Batting a thousand on this one. Tried 3 different models of add-ons, no luck. The main problem seems to be the thickness of the mirror housing, not the height and width. The housing is too thick for the little grabber feet to reach the front side of the mirror. I pulled out my old fender mount but the inside of the body under the hood is made so that the feet have nothing to grab. Oh well. If you get behind me on the road, find a good place to pass cause I can't see ya.

Sounds like you'll need to customize existing ones then. You would think there would be some point in the system where you could add an inch or two...guessing that if wouldn't bother you if they always stuck out in extra inch or two when fully retracted.

Does anyone know what these things look like when taken apart?

DK...take one apart and snap some pictures, someone will have a good idea to solve your problem here......Just be very very careful........

Good Luck!
