Ok guys, I have owned several Fords over the years but the 99 SD in my sig is the first diesel. I am just looking for some maintenance tips such as oilchange intervals, type of oil, airfilter. Any additives to the fuel or brands of fuel that are better than others, that type of thing. I am not going to be working it hard, occasional loads of gravel, topsoil and mulch and towing atv's and such. It only has 27K miles on it and looks brand new except for the tires, that are original and are starting to dryrot. I am going to put some A/T tires on the back and less agressive on the front since it is 2wd. Any suggestions on tires are welcome also. Anything that yall thing will help this truck last along time for me is welcome. Thanks, Dan
27K miles, nice! Welcome to the 7.3 side of the world.
Oil change intervals can vary depending on whether or not you test the oil, usually 5000 is a good number IMO.
Use oil that has diesel rating, many use Rotella T 15W-40, I use Rotella T6 5W-40 synthetic, Motorcraft oil is a good lube too.
Airfilter, does it still have the factory box? If so make sure it is sealing well, inspect the intake tube going to the turbo for signs of dust. They are known to crack. Alot of us run the 6637 filter, you can buy a kit if you like, Riffraff Diesel: RDP 6637 Filter Kit, or do it yourself the filters are available most places.
Fuel additives I like to run Power service diesel kleen, I actually use it every tank...probably overkill but I like it. Grey bottle in the summer, white in the winter.
Fuel: Important to get quality fuel, where I am all stations have diesel and move it regularly, look for stations that use fuel regularly that should help.
There is quite a bit of "Preventive" maintenance stuff/mods to help with possible failures down the road, I recommend doing the intank mods Welcome to guzzle's In-tank Hutch Mod Web Page you don't necessarily have to install the large pre pump filter, I went with a small inline filter from NAPA PN 30007 IIRC. The 50 cent mod 50 Cent Mod is another good measure and helps you become familiar with the engine.
Thanks for the info guys, lots to read and lots to learn. I put the truck to work this weekend, hauled 3 tons of gravel for my driveway. 15K truck, trailer and gravel on the scales, the truck handled it fine, my back on the other hand not as good. Lol.
