Bug Shield MPG Affect?
Truckslammer, none of us "though" you were dumb or a dummy. Did you really "though" that others here were dumb enough not to know what ESOF means? Geeze, I always "though" people here knew that already. What a tough day it's been on my thought processes.
Do you guys think warmdye will appreciate the irony of this post?
More importantly, was "dumbby" an intentional mistake, or another example of irony?
I guess that hardoud and myself agree. I also have the chorme plastic bug shield and think that it looks great. Careful who what you talk about or criticize. We all have our preferences.
Some like to lift the trucks, some like to slam the trucks. Me, I like mine stock. Each to thier own. I would like to improve the ride and and looking at one of the air ride systems, just havn't decided on which one. I do carry a lot of weight. I guess that the loaded weight is around 2600 lbs on the fifth wheel hitch.
I was wondering is there any shock around that can handle the heavier loads and still provide a smooth ride. So far, from what I have found it looks like I'm going to have to go to the Air Ride type suspension.
I have seen a couple of gas charged shocks for big loads, a member of the site Marty G. at overkill racing (956) 664-2621 has some Bilsteins for 250s. I also believe that the stiffer the better on big loads, so I have added shock mounts on my load bearing trucks, I was running 2 RS9000 on a F150 with an add leaf pack to basically 250 suspension and I could pull a 18ft trailer with a chevy on it with no feeling of it being there (Love my 351w)

I am indifferent about the looks. I also can't comment about the effect a bugshield has on MPG, since I haven't driven one off the lot without a shield since 92. I can tell you that they do keep the nose of your hood from getting all chipped up (and possibly dented) from flying objects. When I bought my '97 F150, I had one installed before I took it off the lot, and man am I glad I did. On the way home, a bird bounced off the bug shield. When I got home, I saw that its beek had taken a huge gouge out of the bug shield where it would've taken a big chunk of paint with it and would've left a ding. Believe it or not, the same thing happened again a couple months later on the other side.
This isn't to say it will keep everything that will eventually scratch your hood at bay, but it does help. Six years and 55,000 miles later, when I traded for my newly ordered '03 F350, there was a pretty good scrape on the top of the hood from a bolt that flew off a semi (that one took out the windshield too) and some smaller scratches from gravel trucks throwing rocks, but the nose and the front half of the hood were in perfect condition. The plastic had lots of little pits and scratches, but they're a lot less noticable there than if the paint were gone.
I actually asked a question about a year ago about the effectiveness of a bug deflector to actually deflect bugs off the windshield and got a reasounding "they don't really keep 'em off the windshield." Has that changed?

Trunkslammer, are you a member that has changed his name? Were you previously someone who earned 5 stars from his peers but has recently made a new user name for yourself? Or...

Warmdye, are you as quick to point out to errors of one's ways when they burn the flag or fly/display it in a manner that you know is not being done in a patriotic way? eg. Upside down to protest the war.

Hey Monsta! Again, glad to see you back on the boards. I still don't think they keep the bugs off the windshield effectively, although I think they help somewhat. The benefit I have seen is protection from all the big bugs, salt, sand, and apparently even birds that find their way to the front nose of these trucks. I have noticed an air flow difference accross the windshield, though. It seems to help with wiper & wiper fluid performance, IMHO. And I still think it looks cool!
I just finished driving from Ashville, NC to Davidson NC and back, 1st with the bug guard on, then the same drive without it.
I found that with it I got 16.9 and without it 17.1 I fueled at the same place and same pump and figured by pen and paper, and took the same route, both thu mountains, and maintained close to the same speed.
I hope this answers the age old question, I firmly think it looks the same with or without it, and as for bugs on the wind shield, you must be crazy, they will hit it with or with out it!!! but the front of the hood the 3-6 in section that it covers and just behind it is protected, if you think that it protects the whole front, sorry, but you haven't travled behind a gravel truck or any semi with no trailer, they throw the object up over 20-30ft then back down and they will hit the hood, windshield, top, or even bed.
