When did Ford change to the SOHC from the OHV motor? I have a '97 xlt with what I thought was the SOHC motor...but now I keep seeing all these posts with guys who have the OHV motor in their '97's. How do I know which one I have?
Hint: I had the cam chain guide replaced in my motor...does that make a difference in my diagnosis?
John, Explorers have had OHV engines since its introduction in 1991. They added the more powerful SOHC in 1997. This engine was an option for XLT's though. It was standard in Eddie Bauer and Limited models.
So...when you open your hood and see the plastic cover that said "4.0L SOHC" on the top, then you have the more powerful version of the V6. If you see "4.0L EFI", then you have the less powerful OHV version of the V6.
Thank you for the reply...although now I feel stupid because I knew what motor I had all along. What I didn't know is that it was an option for the xlt...that's why they always ask me what motor I've got at the parts store...didn't know why!
Thanks for answering what should have been an obvious question.
