Ok, I know I got 'some' answers' on another thread, BUT some of the answers I needed were not. I will take any advise from those that know or may have done this themselves.
I have a 65' F-100
I have all the brackets and pully set up on a FE motor setting in my shop. Even still has the original compressor in place.
I know where there are two F-100 with the air conditions/heater combo in place. One is a 67' and the other is 68'. The air condition units are under dash type that go most of the way across the bottom of dash. I'm assuming they were put in there when by the dealer when they were new. OR?
Questions:
1. 'IF' I remove my stock heater, will these types of air/heater units fit under the dash of my 65'?
2. Since Air condition systems use the new type Freon, IF I switch out the compressor, can I switch over to the new stuff. OR will I need to change a bunch of other stuff besides the compressor? I'm assuming the old freon is not available any more.
3. The under dash 'lines' on the 67/68 look pretty close to my 65'. Will they match up? Has anyone tried this before? Are my eyes OFF or do you guys think it might match up?
After checking out the prices some of these custom/air places want, I was a little put off. The cheapest I found for a custom air system was $1.200 plus tax/shipping, nothing fancy for sure, and that was just for the air and you keep your own heater. THUS the reason I was wondering if the air/heat system from the 67' or 68 will work. I don't mind spending the $$ for a compressor and couple small items but I just can't afford what they want for those custom systems. Can anyone give me straight thought on this???
Thank you guys.
R-12 is old on ebay and some local shops (portland or) still have and will put it in for you here.
I did a quick google search and a search on craigslist in my town and found alot of people selling it so its not that hard to get, just not cheap.
Don't know if this helps or answers any questions you had but just a thought to keep in mine.
Bill (ND), I just saw your post to my question on the other thread. Depressing, thinking I would have to pay that kind of $$ for a custom system. Is Freon for the old type system still available? Will the original type 65/66 under dash air units fit (get in the way) of a ranger console? That is if I should I find an original air con unit in good shape. So far, all the ones I have seen, are in bad shape.
HO-HUM.....................
Not bill but I can find it in large amounts her in portland Oregon.
Im sure if you do a quick search on craigslist in your town in the service section and a over all search from the home page you will find some easy.
ebay also has alot for sale.
Rgd9664, funny, I also just checked craigslist in my area and found a couple selling it but all the places near me will not install it because of the laws here in Cal. Not sure exactly what laws they are talking about, they just said NO. If I thought for sure R-12 would be available for a long time to come, I would feel more comfortable in using it. What are you thoughts on long term availability of R-12? IF I stock up on enough to last me 20 yrs. :O) How long does a system normally last. If a compressor goes bad or you get a leak in a hose or joint, that means more freon. I know there is still some around but I don't think they make it anymore,,, do they?
There is a thread on her that I was posting on that talked about a new freon coming out and that they where going to get rid of the kind we use in todays cars.
I will see if I can find the thread and post it here, if I remember right the new stuff should be able to be used in r-12 vehicles as well.
Rgd9664, I was just making comment to Bill (ND), he posted an answer to my question on another thread. I read his post after I started this new thread.

YAAAAAAAAAAA,,, that would be great. I don't mind having the old style under dash units they put in 65/66 F-100s if it will fit nicely in front of the console. Those old unit put out some nice cold air. Not the best looking thing hanging there but I would save a whole lot of money.

They also talk about propane. Here's the link.
It was a thread I started when I was asking about the a/c unit I have in my truck. I have a couple pictures of it in my albums.
I really haven't heard anything more about the new stuff but I think I will do a search tonight to see what I can find out.

Reason: spelling
Thanks, I'll check out the web link real fast and than I better hit the sac. Early day tomorrow. Looking forward to reading what you find. Thanks again.
The new stuff is called HFO-1234yf, with what I have read so far online (unless there isn't anyone trying it yet) there is nothing to say it will work with our r-12 systems and there even saying it might not work with the systems that are out now.
Just type in the name of the new stuff and see what you find.
Im going to keep looking and hope to find a answer cause it would be great if it does work with my truck.
Its not even really required to be in vehicles till 2017 but auto makers will get a kicker till then if they start using it.
( after more searching, it will not work with the current a/c systems on the market now, some say it will but they don't want to cross contaminate the systems because the HFO-1234yf is flammable )
the will keep the current freon in production but will start phasing out the a/c units that are put in cars instead.
the HFO-1234yf will cost more and there is no way to retro you car to it unless you buy a new a/c system that runs on HFO-1234yf.
Still looking to see what is said about r-12 to HFO-1234yf conversion.

Reason: more info
From what I got from some of the old posts, Propane is looking pretty good. I need to talk to a guy I know at the local dealer. He's been a life long friend and one of their top wrenches. 28 yrs wrenching for dealers. Prolly not till Fri. Need to be at the University most every day this week. Should have a little time Fri morning.
