GT-40 head swap
I've bolted a lot of older heads on older small blocks, but nothing newer like this.
Thanks for any answers!
I've read on some websites that several of the full size long-tube headers, particularly those by Hedman, will clear the plugs. Do you know the quality (performance wise) of the stock Explorer headers?
I'm thinking of the GT-40P heads for a sore of "No-Budget" buildup, only because I hear that the exhaust side of the P heads flows a tad better then the original GT's, even though the exhaust valve of the P heads is actually a tad smaller!
I'm trying to up the performance of the older 302 in my truck for street/some strip use. Would it be that much simpler to just go with the original GT-40's and skip the header hassle? I originally planned to adapt a set of Cleveland 2bbl heads, but considering all the necessary changes (water passage mods, manifold spacers or special manifold, pistons, push rods, etc.) the GT-40P's looked like a lot less of a headache. I have heard that the E7TE's have some credit as well.
And by the way, I hear that even if you use flat top pistons with the GT-40's, you need valve reliefs in them. It's always been my understanding that all early 302 flat top pistons had valve reliefs. True?
Any further advice? Polkat.
