2wd headers on 4wd

I thought i read somewhere the other day that said 2wd headers will fit on a 4wd. Is this true? the truck is a 1980 f250 witha 400.

thanks

You can try, but most likely will not clear the running gear. Hell, the 4WD units barely clear the running gear and they hang too low.

When I did my conversion to a 4x4, I left my stock exhaust manifolds from the 2x4 and dropped the motor into 4x4 chassis. Everything fit fine. I'm not sure if your asking about the stock manifolds or aftermarket headers. Sorry if I didn't help.

i think it has to do with the one on the drivers side interfering with the front drive shaft !

I have a 1981 F350 4x4 with the 400, came across some 2wd long-tube headers on a 1982 F250 with the 351M.

They fit, but....

Yes, the driver's side comes pretty close to the front driveshaft.

I'm OK with that as the most 4x4 use I get is on forest service roads in the Colorado mountains.

But....

The passenger side fit only after ovaling out one of the tubes with a ball peen hammer to keep it from hitting the starter motor.

YMMV

Yeah i would be too. Out here in nevada we get some pretty harsh winters and people think it is the best time to go off roading and end up getting stuck. So they call my dad to come pull them out because he has a 97 4wd diesel. And since he doesn't have a lift of anything it is easy he gets stuck too. So mine would be used as like a back up or something because i plan on gettin a winch. long story short... It would have its fair share of 4 wheelin'

Little more than half an inch clearance from outer edge of yolk to one of the tubes.

It's never caused a problem even under full loads of dead trees + hauling a trailer of more dead trees, the front axle movement is up & down not side to side.

Been this way for almost 3 years now with no issues.

You got a point there about it not going side to side. Does yours have a lift? Mine has a 4" lift. would that make it further away or closer? I would imagine it would be a little further away? Am i correct?

My F350 has whatever lift it came with out of the factory (which I believe is 3-4" but not certain).

Sorry, but I have zero idea what a user-added lift might do to clearance.

Oh okay. and just one more question. Don't 4wd headers hang down really low and the 2wd headers are tucked up underneath more? And do you know how much more clearence there would be with the 4wd headers?

Hmmmm..... no, sorry, don't know the answers to either.

I found my headers in a JY and got 'em on a prayer.

I don't *like* the fact they're close to the driveshaft, and I would rather have not beaten on 'em with a hammer to make 'em clear the starter, but I needed a new exhaust system and the price was right for these.
