Sounds to me like he doesn't really know what he's talking about when it comes to our trucks. Return lines are not that bad to fix and last a long time if done right (my originals had almost 200k on them and didn't leak a drop!, though air may have been getting in).
Running out of fuel sucks, but its not a major issue, the pump will prime itself, just needs a little bit of time cranking.
