I've never done it but i've read that they keep the up pipes loose to bolt the thing to the turbo and after doing so then tighten the up pipes. I wouldn't think you would have to do this for a new turbo only but someone will tune in shortly. Chet

Loosen the up-pipes at the manifolds

You have to loosen the uppies at the manifold.

Put the turbo on correctly, torque it correctly, and NEVER pry on the pedestal.

Align the baby's butt, put on the clamp, and then tighten the uppies at the manifold.

I missed the alignment part the last time I pulled my turbo. It will sound awful.

I've never had problem with up pipes moving out of position upon removal of turbo but down pipe is another story. I put jack under truck/exhaust pipe and use slight pressure to raise downpipe approx. 1/4 inch. Then on top, I stuff rags at the side to hold downpipe against turbo. It would be nice to have 4 hands or another person and you could avoid this. If the alignment is not correct, those clamps are a bear.

I am assuming your not putting a Late 99 turbo on a Early 99 truck???

Otherwise you just have to play with it... Turbo swaps are easy so long as you hit everything with PB Blaster a day or two before. And when I say everything, I mean damn near the whole turbo.
