Having worked on other four wheel drive Fords my son and I have aquired a few extra parts. This new acquisition has a 351 with a trhee speed automatioc transmission in it. It is a 86 F150 Ext. cab long box and it also has the manual shift four wheel drive. We have an OD tranny from an 88 Bronco that my son wants me to put in instead of the three speed. The transfer case from the 88 had an automatic four wheel set up. Can we put just the OD in and make it work? Mike believes the transfer case will bolt up the same.
I'm positive that the od will bolt up. If its and 88 than its gona be an AOD which is a stand alone unit. It works like a normal non comp. controled tranny, The transfercase from the 3 speed should bolt up fine. You will most likely have to have the driveshafts changed.
I have a 1980 Bronco with a 351M, Motorcraft 2150 2 BRL, C6 trans and a NP208 transfer with a 9in rear end and a dana44 IFS front with 31x10.5 15 tires. I do alot of highway driving, and with the C6 the engine is turning about 3000 RPM at 70 MPH, I go through gas like its free. I also like trail riding and rock climbing. If the AOD trans is a stand alone unit with no computer control, will it fit my 351M? What I mean is the bolt pattern and transfer mounts the same? Would really like to have a OD for the highway and maybe save some gas money to male it worth while doing the change over. Also if you have any Links I can get an AOD if it will fit I would be interested.
PS I am also wanting to put a 400 crank and pistons in or trying to switch to a 460, Any ideas?

I am new to the four wheel drive scene and don't know that much about it. This all started with my son getting a 90 F150 short box four wheel drive and making it into a mud runner. Mechanically it is quite sound but the body looked like a junk yard dog. We obtained a Bronco with good front end sheet metal and doors and I was able to get the 302 and entire drive line out of it. I concidered putting the AOD transmission into my recently aquired 86 F150 but decided to keep the C-6 in instead. It would require too many headaches that I didn't need to ask for. the truck gets about the same mileage as my GMC used to and if I want to pull something I have the means by which to do it now. As some of the others on the forum have said in the past the verticle pedal doesn't need to be on the floor all the time. Driving habits have a great deal to do with the type of mileage you get. I expect my machines to work for me but I don't get on them. They have served well.
I was told that the AOD will bolt up to my engine and that the manual shift transfer case will bolt up to the transmission but I don't know what cables are needed between engine and transmission. One other thing I have found out from the 48-60 Ford site is that the early AOD trannys have problems. You need to locate one from I believe is 94 and newer to get a better set-up in order to have a more reliable transmission.
Good luck.

The 351M has a different bellhousing bolt pattern than the 4.9L, 5.0L, & 5.8L so I don't think you can get an AOD (or any OD transmission) for your truck. There's a slim chance Advance can help you, or maybe Baumann.
Gear Up
The AOD was discontinued around '90 when the E4OD replaced it, but re-emerged around '95 as the 4R70W, the truck version of the computer-controlled AODE.
Any '80-96 fullsize t-case will bolt up to any '80-96 fullsize 4WD transmission. The AOD's only controls are the shift lever and the TV cable, and there's a special procedure detailed in the Haynes manual (and maybe here) for adjusting it. If it's not adjusted properly, the transmission will be ruined in only a few miles.
