Question I Want A Pretty Engine!!!!!!

Anybody have a good safe process for cleaning an installed 7.3L engine (stock) or any tips or tricks would also be welcomed. The last and only time I cleaned my engine I used Engine Brite, a small steamer and soft misting water for rinsing, I had OK results. For the most part I just need to remove light/medium dirt/dust and soot. The most important thing is that I dont tear anything up, just not worth it.

Thanks FTE!!!!!!!!

Really dont know about how safe it is, but I ve been doing it this way for years with no adverse effects..... First I either cover the power steering tank with a ziplock bag and rubber band it or sometimes I just stick a toothpick in the vent hole. I then run the engine for a few minutes (15 or so) to warm it just a little. I then spray the entire engine with Mean Green degreaser. Not sure if it is available nationwide, but its one of the best degreasers I have ever used. You can actually watch the dirt and grime disappear when the Mean Green hits it. Anyway, just let it set for a few minutes, then hose it off with a garden hose. Just my method..... Every time I have washed it this way It always seems to remove a little more dirt. Will try to get a pic posted, its pretty clean for a 99!

You know meier63, I have done what you have suggested to other vehicles before, mostly mid-size cars, and it does work. However when I do it I use pressurized water for rinsing, but maybe I can try it with a soft rinse. The rinsing step is what is tricky for me because I dont want to get water and/or chemicals where it could harm the engine. Are you saying that you feel the power steering pump vent is the only vunerable area/part???

Thanks for your advice meier63.

Anymore out there guys?

I blast the crap out of it with 2500psi. Then soak the greasy spots in Purple Power and blast it some more. I do avoid hitting wire connectors, but a healthy dose of dielectric grease on plugs like IPR and ICP sensor is a good idea.

I dunno why so many are paranoid about this...

I've put well over 300k miles on my 2 PSD's. My engines not as clean as Rick's, but I actually drive my trucks in the rain (and SNOW!!!).

I'm with Jason... I use a pressure washer, purple power or simple green and then rinse. I got water in my injector harness one time, just unplugged it, blew it out with some compressed air and it was good to go. I used to have a dirty, dirty, nasty engine, but now it's sparkly clean!!

just spray the crap out of everything, after a healthy dowsing of purple stuff! never had a problem. But if youre worried about pulling a connector apart for water you shouldnt be under the hood anyway..... lol, j/k. I like to pull them apart and put dielectric grease anyway. keeps water and dirt out. just use a med fan tip. you'll be fine.

It was just water in the connector to the UVCH. I just unplugged it and dried it out. Like Justin said, slap some dielectric grease on there too, helps keep moisture out in the future.

I use Simple Green in the concentrated form (don't cut it with water) and spray on, let it sit for a few minutes and rinse with a garden hose. Repeat as necessary.

I happen to be one of the guys thats afraid to wash my engine....Ive done it twice and both times I had to replace the belt because it went to squeeling bad afterwards....maybe I'm just an idiot. Maybe I had the engine running... I guess I am an idiot!

I've seen Ricks engine, its just as clean as the rest of his truck. I think he keeps it under a cover, and never drives it. He got the odometer out of a wrecked truck. The original is sitting in his curio cabinet with 9 miles on it.

Also watch the alternator. It won't hurt it once but time and time again I believe it shortens its life. I say that because I'm with Chris above but had to replace my alternator premature I think. My 2cents. Chet

You cleaned the belt off to well and it squeels. Why not just spray some 'belt dressing' on it and it should have been fine.

Haha, good one Frank. The only way I can get enough miles on my truck to change the oil, I have to jack up the back of the truck and put the cruise to 80 mph for a few days.
