You will not be going from 11 to 15-17 with a change to an OD automatic.

20% under the best conditions puts you at 13-14, maybe.

There is more to getting that mpg than a trans with OD. This I know and understand. Thank you.

Looking at an E40D/4R100 trans to replace this worn out C6, what would I need to do with electronic components to install correctly?

It has a 3 speed auto trans in now. I'd like to put a super duty 5 speed with O/D. I would like to know what trans would fit? Any modifications that may need to be done? And will it make a big enough difference in drivability and mpg?? Thanks for the help.
If you accurately compute your mpg I doubt you are consistently getting 11mpg now. If you modify stuff you will never recoup your investment in gas savings. Your only chance for significant improvement is to drive 35mph or less or downhill.

I compute my mpg every time I fill up. I am consistently getting 11mpg. mpg isn't my only concern. The last owner didn't take care of the truck, so it needs some TLC despite mpg. Do you know anything about compatibility of E40D/4R100 trans going into it, replacing its C6?

The 4R100 would have a different bolt pattern but you could go with an E4OD out of another small block `91 or earlier.
You could get the stock computer and trans wiring harness from the donor to run it and the engine or you could keep your existing computer to run the engine and buy a stand alone controller for the trans.
However I would still think an overdrive unit bolted to the C6 would be the way to go, especially as you have a 4x2.

Ok. I had another guy tell me about this OD unit. Can you tell me more about these units and maybe refer me to a good one? I am worried about this trans inside. The past owner didn't take much care of it. I'd hate to put $ into it and still end with a failure, ya know.

Gear Vendors under/overdrive transmissions the most awarded auxiliary transmissions. Click on this link for some info.
You could probably pick up a used one for a C6 without too much trouble.
Even if your C6 fails at some point they are cheap to rebuild (fraction of the cost of rebuilding an E4OD). Also the C6 is a strong trans and will last if properly looked after. Maybe consider a fluid change at some point.

These guys want $3,000 for an OD for a three speed!! I'm on a much tighter budget. I have found remanufactured E40D/4R100 for $1,200. I know I'd need the comp and harness for it but then I have a really strong/new 5 speed with OD. They say a 22%-28% mpg increase. Do you think that is accurate? What increase % would you expect of a reman E40D/4R100?

The E4OD is not a 5 speed auto, it is 4 speeds,, Third is straight through just like your C6.

Exactly.
Also remember that you would also need the E4OD torque converter.

with all that you are thinking about doing you might be better off finding a different truck or just overhauling what you have now ! as for the engine you might think about change it over to a MASS AIR FLOW unit , then you can build some power into it !

check those gears out in the rear , if they are 4.10 then switch them to 3.55 !

The pro con ratio to rebuilding vs buying better, but still used, truck is what I'm figuring out. What all does that entail? I'm pretty sure I have 3.55 in there.
