I had a guy recently wanting to buy a column, but said it had to be from a 4x4, so my 2wd one wouldn't work. That got me thinking and I checked them out. I can't really see a difference, so is there one? The only noticable difference in my two is one is tilt. Both are from 78 Supercabs, one a 2wd, one 4x4. It appears to me that the only difference is that on a 4x4 there is an extension that goes between the column and the box, but this looks interchangeable. The extension fits both columns.
There is no difference. A lot of people are confused about the steering shaft and that is what makes them different form a 2wd to 4wd. A 2wd column will work perfectly fine in a 4wd, I've done the swap many times.
Cool, thanks. I couldn't for the life of me see what they were seeing as an issue. The shaft looks different, but is the same design, they are the same length and look the same. Good info to know.
??? I guess that would depend on the 2wd, my 78 f150 2wd is way different than any of my 4wd's, the 2wd utilizes a rag joint and the steering shaft flange that attaches to the rag joint is welded/one piece
