Thinking about a super duty.

Hello everyone,

I have a 97 F-150 and a 32 ft travel trailer.

Truck is a 2wd supercab, A4OD transmission with a b&m Stacked Plate tranny cooler and 5.4 v8. 3.55 limited slip

My Travel trailer is about 6000-6500 loaded for camping.

My truck tows it great. I am very pleased with the 5.4 and the tranny.

However, I am thinking about upgrading the truck to a Super Duty. Not for power or anything like that, but for payload and room for my family. I got a 10 year old and a 7 year old.

Soo, I was wondering your opinion on a 5.4 equipped Super Duty crew cab with 4.10 gears for my combo?

Do you think that the towing performance of the 5.4 will be less than the on in my F150?

Diesel is pretty much out of the question because my budget will only be 7-9 grand. I am seeing Crew Cabs around her with Gas motors (both V10 and V8) anywhere from 5-10k so I know they are out there.

My FIL offered to sell me his 99 F250 PSD Lariat 4x4 with 100k miles on it but I can't afford that truck. LOL.

Thanks!

You should do everything you can to get your father in laws truck! 100k is low miles for the 7.3.

Did you really mean 32', or do you mean 22'?

I have a 32' TT and it weights way more then 6500lbs, more like 11,000lbs.

IF, I had to buy a gas engine in a SD, I would get the V-10 to pull a 32' camper.

Yup 32 ft. No slide though. Dry weight is 4975. Skyline weighs every trailer that comes out of their factory. My gross weight is 7500. The F150 does a fine job towing it. But I want a superduty.

Thanks!

Given your criteria, I would go with the V10 with 4.30 gears. Load range E tires inflated to near max pressure.

For more room, you could consider an Excursion, but I don't know if you need a truck bed for other things. It's just a thought. They built from an F250 platform.

I would suggest the V10 over the V8. Although I've never driven a 5.4L....

My 6.8L with 3.73 does just fine, plus it's cool just to tell people its a V10.

I have a v10 with 4.10 gears, 2008 3valve crew cab 4x4 and just got back from a weekend towing a 6,500 lb boat. I was able to maintain 65 mph even on steep grades up to about 4,000 feet elevation however the engine was working really hard always over 4k rpm and it really felt slow. The 5.4 will be slower than your 5.4 f150- same engine- about 2klbs of more truck. Get the v10.

Thanks everyone. I need a truck so it will have to be a super duty. I will probably get a v10 unless I can come up with 13k for my fil truck. Lol

If you are happy with the towing performance of your f150 with the 5.4 and 3.55's, then you'll be happy with the super duty with the 5.4 and 4.10's.

Keep in mind that an SD is going to weigh a LOT more than your F-150.... And that extra payload capacity has a habit of getting used!
So when all is said and done, the SD with 5.4 may feel more anemic than your current rig. As others report, still "OK" and will do fine on flats, but may get winded in mountains and high altitude.

When I first bought my TH, I had an F150 with the 4.6L engine. My TH is not big (19ft) but it's heavy (4500# empty). Once you put quads, gas water and all the other "stuff" in it, the weight adds up quick.

My F150 would pull it, it would even get it up steep hills, but not well. The V-10 is a totally different ball game.

To me, it's like comparing apples to walnuts. My F150 did it, but my V-10 does it with Gusto! If you want to pull it, pull it well and not have to worry about what you're carrying or where you're going, get a V-10.

Just my 2cents speaking from personal experience.

Here is someone over @ RV.Net that has the folowing setup

2011 F-150 HD Ecoboost 3.5 V6. 2550 payload, 17,100 GCVWR - Photo in profile
2004 F-150 HD (Traded after 80,000 towing miles)
2007 Rockwood 8314SS 34' travel trailer

I tow a 14' popup with anoter brand (Dodge 1500 4x4 w/5.2) and I know it is there. Looking myself to move up to a 3/4 too.

I have a friend with a 05 F250, V10, and 9k 5th wheel. Unknown gears. He towed through the Poconos doing 70-80 geting 7-8 mpg.

Best of luck

The V10 loves lower gears because they get the RPM higher, which is where the V10 likes to make power. I have the 4.30 gears and I don't think higher gears would gain any MPG because the V10 is so happy (HP and MPG) at about 3K RPM.

Get yourself a V10. They are more common than the V8 from what I've seen and you won't see much if any difference in MPG, only in power!
